I'm looking for info on different approaches to the Mistassibi NE. Hoping to put in about 5-7 days of upstream/lake hopping etc. before the actual river. I'd love any info on roads, route ideas, etc. Thanks!

Search the forum for some really old posts by GeneU. You might get a feel for the misery of trying to reach the upper river overland.

Keep in mind that things have changed considerably there since those old posts, there are many more roads now and there have been a lot of fires in the past 10 years.

Also be sure to check out Charles website, cartespleinair.org. There are some excellent maps on there for the Mistassibi as well as some general river info including access options etc... .

Does anyone ever have issues accessing Charles Leduc's website?
cartespleinair.org

I often get a message that the site no longer exists.

Thank you all for your responses! We're going to put in at the North end of Lac Temiscamie (as of last summer, that logging road was passable) and our understanding is that it should take us about 6-7 days to make it to the river from there.

Well please document the the Temiscasmie to the river section as well as you can, a gps track with notes would be a fabulous addition. Great river but it's a long way and too short if you use the "normal" put-in downstream of Lac Machisque.

Yes, please update when you finish - where did you find access details? I've accessed the Mistasinni through Lake Temiscamie, and have long looked at topos to try to find a way to get to the Mistassibi. Isn't the N-E branch on the other (eastern) side of the Mistassibi? I love starting trips this way - upriver and across to the headwaters.

So we are to head out on the Mistassibi next Sunday. The river levels have been fluctuating quite a bit, currently the river is now up over 500cms and coming down.

Anyone know what the upper level would be for paddling the river in tandem canoes? We are all experienced canoeists.

thanks

rab

We paddled the NE branch in early May 2009 when the Mistassibi guage was hoovering around the 500 mark. Keep in mind there's no way to know for sure how this coorelates exactly with flows on the NE branch but nevertheless it felt like big, big water at the time. In the upper more narrow stretches the water was 'almost' in the trees. Some of the 3's had monstorous waves that probably upped the class. The challenge is dealing with an upset as it's not pool and drop but the rapids go on and and on. We were in solo boats.

Thanks, Doug. Levels are at below 500 now. Hopefully they keep dropping a bit, but not too far!

Are you paddling the NE or main branch? Looking forward to hearing about it!
