Need suggestions for canoe trips in Quebec province. Primarily interested in river trips with Class I-III rapids. Loop trip is preferable, but also drive or fly in to start and end points is fine. I live in New Hampshire so this would be a lot closer than driving to Ontario or other western provinces. Thanks!

So many choices.........a few more details would be helpful;

Trip duration range.
Travel time available (door to door)
Portage distance/difficulty acceptable
Isolation/remoteness level
Need for outfitting and/or shuttle services

There are literally hundreds of possible routes in Quebec depending on the parameters.

Riviere Chococouane La Verendrye. About 8 hours from Littleton NH.. A week or so trip

Also the Bonaventure River on the Gaspe.

Eric, lots of choices! Here are three more possibiities to what I am sure will become a long list!

One of the three rivers emptying into the Ottawa from the Quebec side from Fort Coulonge westward would make for a nice trip. From west to east are the Dumoine, the Noire, and the Coulonge.

Using Esprit Whitewater, an outiftter as well as a rafting company located in Davidson, Quebec to shuttle you to the start point of one of them and then paddle back to Davidson over a one-week to ten-day period.

Esprit’s website - https://whitewater.ca

Other forum members will be able to provide the names of other possible outfitters or individuals who do shuttles for the three rivers I've mentioned.

Here is what a shuttle from Davidson to the Coulonge headwaters would look like:

Shuttles to the top of the Noire or of the Dumoine would be a bit shorter.

An essential source of information on these rivers and what they involve in terms of rapids and portages is Hap Wilson’s Rivers of the Upper Ottawa Valley. amazon.com has a copy for US $20.

My brother and I did the Coulonge in 2016 right from Hwy 117 to the headwaters in Lac au Barrage and then down to the Ottawa. We picked it because it is the longest of the three rivers mentioned. When we got to the Ottawa River we just kept paddling downriver to the city of Ottawa itself.

The following post has maps, some details on logistics, and links to day-by-day reports.

Thanks to all the responders! Trip duration would be 7 days to 2 weeks. Not worth it to do all the planning and travel for a trip less than a week. Don't mind portages. Prefer isolation and remoteness. Would welcome a shuttle if not a loop trip.

One other factor I forgot to ask about of Time of Year as some routes are best in the Spring and far too shallow in late Summer.

Previous mentions that I would concur with....

Bonaventure in the Gaspe region, very nice mostly Class II river but it's short, 5 days generally.

The three Ottawa Valley rivers, Noire, Dumoine, Coulonge are good options with multiple possible put-ins, a bit on the civilized side (road crossings and well used campsites).

Another option to look at would be the Ashuapmushuan, it can be a bit busy in mid-summer, lots of good rapids, nice camping and easy to arrange shuttles.

Suggest you have a look at this list of maps/guides, many would be too short, too long or too remote but you might find some ideas. (Guides are all in French).

I second this post! I have done the Noire River multiple times and it is absolutely amazing!
