I'm looking for any information I can get on this stretch of the Liard. I have had no luck finding anything so far. Have sent e-mail requests twice to the Mckenzie River Paddlers website, but no response.

"Blackstone Landing" website says that it is a good place to begin or end a canoe trip - so presumably that would be down the Liard if starting there.

Anyone ever done this stretch? I'm thinking of doing the S Nahanni, and then continuing on to Ft Simpson to avoid the paid shuttle from Blackstone, or a second flight.

appreciate any info whatever, even second hand or just a guess?

thanks,

mat

I'm interested in doing the South Nahanni again. I've done it from Flat Lake on the Little Nahanni. I'd like to do it starting from Moose Ponds or the Broken Skull, but would also be glad to repeat the trip starting on the Little Nahanni.

I haven't done the Liard below Blackstone Landing. We flew in from Fort Liard and had our vehicle shuttled to Blackstone Landing.

My guess is there is little between those two points and it would be an easy paddle with current, wind could be an issue at times.

Would this help?

The Parks Canada site just notes the river is "navigable" from Nahanni Butte to Ft. Simpson, and rates Beaver Dam Rapids as Gr. 2-3.

jmc, thanks for that link. I looked in the trip reports, but didn't see it for some reason.

That may make me change my mind about dong that part of the river.

Get on Google Earth and fly down the Liard from Nahanni Butte to Fort Simpson. The river is big, and the terrain is flat. The nice stuff is in the canyons on the South Nahanni. I remember thinking when we got out of the canyons and were approaching Nahanni Butte, "The good stuff is over; now we have the slog down to Blackstone Landing."

Hi,
Curious what the flight costs are in to the Nahanni - either the falls or Rabbit Kettle, or wherever... AM thinking of a trip there in 2019.
What about the shuttle costs from Blackstone landing back to Simpson.

thanks,
rab

Well I did my nahanni trip down to Blackstone Park. Weather wasn't very nice the final two days, and I had about one minute to decide on accepting a ride to Ft Simpson the next morning, or staying there and wait to see what the weather was going to do and maybe paddle down the Liard. - took the sure thing ride.

But I talked with a few people about the Liard - one guide who'd paddled down to Ft Simpson, and a couple of other people; one guy said he'd driven his jetboat up over The Beaverdam ledge, though he just barely made it. Sounds like it would be easy enough to finish a trip by paddling all the way to Ft Simpson. At least in August it would be.

I'll post a link to trip report.
