I'm thinking of doing a trip this August down the Beaulieu River between Turnback Lake and Reid Lake.

Anybody paddled this river who would like to share their impressions of it?

Roughly how many days would it take to complete from Turnback to Reid? Does the river hold its water well in an average year or is August too late to go? How's the fishing? The portaging? The rapids? Is it scenic?

It'd be great to hear your opinions.

I'm sure others have done the whole river and may have more information but in 1999 I went solo from Yellowknife to Baker Lake via the Back River. I started on the Cameron River and then crossed to the Beaulieu and up it to Camsell Lake and the barrens.

My recollections are a bit hazy. But it was a fine river with some interesting waterfalls. In places I found portage trails and in others I did not. I was ascending and doing it in high water in June.

I have paddled the upper sections of the Beaulieu - upstream of Spencer Lake to its headwaters in the lac du Rocher area. It's an attractive area of transition between forest and tundra, and travel is generally easy.

I also have an old copy of a trip report covering the Beaulieu River from Spencer Lake downstream, ending at Reid Lake campground on the Ingraham Trail east of Yellowknife.

If you would be interested in a copy of that report, send me a PM with your mailing address - I only have a typed copy and the quality is not good enough for scanning.

You might also contact the outfitter Boyd Warner @ Bathurst Arctic Services, to see if he has outfitted any groups on the river lately.

Just to clarify your intended route: start in Reid Lake (Cameron River), south to Harding Lake, east to join the Beaulieu in Hearne Lake, down the Beaulieu to Great Slave, and paddle the big lake back to Yellowknife?

I have some fairly recent notes on the river from a friend who did it a few years ago, and an old description of the Harding - Hearne crossover, if that is in fact your route.
