Hi whoever paddled the Anderson River all the way to Inuvik. I wonder if you have seen or heard of any polar bears in the delta or on Eskimo Lakes in the summer.

Thank you!

Hi Iva,
It's my understanding that most of the bears are hoping to be out with the pack ice, that's where their food is. I've not paddled the Anderson or Eskimo Lakes, but have paddled the Firth and Horton. On the Horton we saw tracks on the coast, but none inland and heard of a polar bear coming into camp on the coast once on the Firth, but I didn't ever see any sign of them. We did not bring any extra deterrents to deal with the possibility of polar bears as we considered them to be a non-issue.
However that was over 10 years ago, things may have changed since.

have fun!

Iva, I do not think so. But I sure can recommend going all the way to the Dempster for a cheap way out. Or - even closer now, to the new road leading to Tuk.
