Fire ban in QC and ON led me to finally plan a trip to the Adirondacks that had been rattling around in my head for awhile. Did a loop through St. Regis and Upper Saranac and loved it: 2hr drive, no fees for anything, great sites, beautiful setting, nice people, and almost no bugs. So any suggestions on other backcountry spots in the Adirondacks, or otherwise elsewhere in NY or VT to check out next?

Also, what's the deal with no mosquitoes? I think I saw two per day. Is there a mosquito season in the Adirondacks, and if so, when does it peter out? (Here in QC, I don't plan trips with my kids until after mid-July when the bugs start to become tolerable.)

If you like lakes, the Daks are great lake paddles. Try the route from Old Forge to Tupper Lake or from Blue Mtn Lake to Tupper Lake. Both were nice 20 years ago.

Try Maine. Get a Gazetteer and go. Lots of rivers and lakes. We have no seeums and this year a lot of mosquitos due to all the rain. ADK is notorious for stable flies when the sun comes out.
