Once again, the members submitted some pretty amazing photos. Thank you so much for entering your photos.

And thanks to the folks who took the time to vote for their favourites. As in the past, it was not an easy job to choose only 3.

It would be great if the all the entrants could take a moment to tell us a bit about their photo.

I've put the username for each entry in the "Photo Credit" field. If I've made any errors, please let me know.

Here's the the link to the Gallery with all the entries:

My Photo was taken on the Ashuapmushuan River in Northern Quebec (~350 km north of Quebec City) in the vicinity of Lac St Jean. This trip was a whitewater trip organised through the Waterloo Wellington Canoe Club.

It was early morning ~6 am (the EXIF data is wrong in case you check), the sun was just rising and there was still mist coming off the water. I took a series of 5 photos varying the exposure for each slightly and combined the photos giving the result you see here.

Here is a larger version of the photo:

The Ashuapmushuan River is a whitewater river that flows into the north end of lac St Jean in Quebec. Our run was 135 Km with a topographical drop of 220 meters (1.63 m / km). It was a great trip that pushed the limits of my skills. Very few portages.

Thanks to those who voted in this contest!

Great shots everyone. :)

Jean, did you use HDR processing with that photo?

Hi Jim,

I used the Photomatix HDR plug in for Lightroom 4.2. I really like the fine tuning ability it gives me.

Just a snapshot taken at some portage a few years back. I liked it so much I made it the picture on top of a recent Christmas "card" - all nature, green and red. It cheers you right up, especially in the middle of winter.... 8)

This photo was taken in 2003 when I was on a canoe trip on the Horton River. We were at the intersection of a rock canyon with the river & a big thunderstorm hit - after the rain stopped I took this shot. The geology on this trip was phenomenal.

Taken late evening on Evelyn Lake in the Chiniguichi area in June on a solo trip. Was sitting on the bank of the lake reading and happened to glance to my right and liked the play of light on the pines and grasses. Taken with Canon Powershot SX120 and no post photo processing.

Smokey, maybe you can get it into the Sudbury newspaper somehow - it might help bolster support for the struggle to keep the Wolf Lake area intact!

The loons on our cottage lake nested about a month earlier than usual this year - probably had to do with the early ice out. The benefit was that the chicks were hatched and out on the water the week before the July long weekend rather than the eggs still being on the nest and getting swamped by the wakeboarding boats.

I managed to get pictures of them every week for the first month or so. In the picture above they were about a week old and by the next week they weren't getting any more free rides from Mom or Dad.

I'm still working on editing videos following them growing up but here is the video from when they were a week old:

Thanks Marilynn. The distance varied, the zoom on the camera goes up to about 800mm equivalent so some shots are fairly far off but the image stablization works best up to about 250mm focal length. Some of the shots are probably within 100'. For those, I would have started off upwind from the loons and let the boat drift downwind. The loons also move around a lot - not surprising for the adults but pretty impressive how fast the 1 week old chicks could swim. The best shots were when the loons chose to move towards where I was floating which brought them closer to me than I would have gone to them.
