For the last five years, I've used a Canon Elph SD800 IS in a Canon waterproof case. Though this Elph is "only" 7 mp, that's plenty if you use them wisely.

Recently, I have upgraded to a Canon G15. It has many virtues, but the greatest is that it is fast: f1.8 at wide angle, to f2.8 at q40 mm equivalent. At 12+ megapixels, it allows for cropping without wasting time with storage.

The G15 bumps lightly against the chest when hiking. In the Canon waterproof case, it is best restrained on the canoe pedestal. It's too big to stuff under a pfd. But it's much, much lighter than any classical DSLR.

The G15 is like the MR Guide/Freedom Solo, the best compromise, but not getting as much attention as it deserves because it is a compromise. But if you don't want more dead weight in a camera, this one may be the best.

Sorry to double post, but I searched for a previous post, and missed it.
