Mine is mostly Northern Manitoba outdoor stuff, a lot of aurora. It's @tony.loewen or @tonyloewen, one or the other lol. Not much canoeing stuff yet, and I am not nearly as active on it as I am on FB.

After years of stubbornly holding out, I recently caved and signed up. I've mostly been using it for my long exposure and urban exploring work, but love all of the wilderness stuff out there.

I think I signed up.. But I have few canoeing photos. And service is way slow for me to download 6000 pictures from the desert over the last four weeks.

Canyons, cactus, caves and that sort of stuff.. Amazingly I do see some wrecks of canoes and kayaks out here!

think of all the pain I am saving you.

Small world but I have met you in a few different places. It's almost like we share the same likes. I met you like 8-9 years ago at an Urbex event, I forget the name of the place we went but it was a factory, then I met you at a Mazda 3 meetup and now your here. I always did enjoy your long exposure light shows!

I'm on instagram as @erica_mae - slowly working on getting more of our paddling adventure photos up. Have a number of pics from our recent Hayes River trip posted, as well as a few from the Manigotagan & Bloodvein.

I just saw this thread, since I'm not usually on the photography subforum, and anyway my own instagram account is much more recent than this thread... so I hope y'all don't mind the necropost, but hey, the social media landscape evolves so fast it kind of makes sense to converse about it through time.

Just wanted to make the comment that if there's a social media platform that directly competes with traditional webforums, it's facebook, specifically through the groups function. More and more I see activity-based facebook groups operating like forums, with people asking questions to the community as a post on the facebook group much as one would as a forum thread. And facebook groups certainly have some "evolutionary advantages" over forums: anyone can start one with a few clicks, and not have to worry about funding or maintaining it, or updating the technology, and joining and posting on one is also faster than doing the same on a forum. And of course you'll see threads from your groups every time you check facebook as opposed to having to deliberately check the forums you use. But I'm definitely rooting for old-fashioned forums in this competition, disadvantaged though they may be... facebook groups lend themselves to short posts and replies, not long-form discussions and reports, and with greater ease comes lessened quality, with more people posting questions they could have easily researched, or using the group as a dumping ground for their poor attempts at funny memes.

Instagram I don't think fills as similar a niche as forums (tearknee's recent trip report notwithstanding), though one might certainly use it with similar motivations, like sharing your experiences and drawing inspiration from the experiences of others -- though in a much more image-focussed way, obviously. And it makes for more fluidity in what kind of stuff you're interested in following/interacting with.

Anyway, I'll check out the instagram accounts that sounded off here. Mine is @dan_and_the_land though it's not super canoeing-focused, kind of a mix of that and hiking, fishing and some urban nature.

I can't stand Facebook for those exact reasons. The Algonquin Park Facebook group is a prime example of how useless the platform is to promote meaningful discussion. There are arguments 40 comments long about whether or not one particular fox is the same one that someone else photographed. And everyone pretends to be an expert while actually knowing nothing. People comment without reading full posts or articles and share misinformation indiscriminately. There are a lot of very stupid people on Facebook.
The beauty of Instagram, for me, is that I can filter out the stupid people and follow accounts that post pictures I like and stories I find interesting. It's nothing like a forum and can't really be compared to one, but it's been a great platform for me to share my work. I've met a lot of great people and actual (paid!) writing work through Instagram.

Slightly off-topic, but this is another example of the beauty of incredibly specific forum communities: My dad recently gave me an old Optimus two-burner stove and I was able to determine exactly which model and era it's from by searching on classiccampstoves.com. Forums are THE BEST for niche enthusiasts!

Hi tearknee,

My IG name is hunterandharris. Although we(my wife and I) do use it for our paddle company, we still include all of our adventures on there. Plus I love making quick IG stories, 15 seconds is a challenge! We love your IG page btw!

Cheers,

Milan H&H
