Of all the forums I've used that support embedded images in posts as , this is the only one that has this issue where you get an error message if you try to submit a post with an image that's over 800 pixels wide. Basically happens with any full-resolution photo that's in a landscape orientation. I honestly would post more trip reports but it's too much work to resize each photo manually before uploading. Is there a way around this? Am I missing something obvious? Is it not possible for the forum software to automatically resize?

By the way, on the topic of uploading, since I see there was a recent thread on what to do now that photobucket isn't doing third party hosting for free... one thing that seems to work for me is to send the photo by gmail chat to anyone, then click on it in the gmail chat conversation box, it will open in a new tab and you can use that URL. Of course that doesn't allow for playing with the size settings.

One thing that you are missing is that you can use a freeware program (there are dozens if not hundreds) to resize images in bulk.

Personally I use Irfanview: https://www.irfanview.com

Resize hundreds or thousands of images with just a couple of clicks.

800 pixel limit is frustrating but better than the alternatives. An electronics forum I participate on has no limit. It will show a thumbnail and with a mouse click the photo appears full size. Most of the time I end up just seeing a small corner of the picture.

It would be great to have a the forum run on a platform that automatically resizes. Probably expensive though and I doubt there's a lot of ad revenue for a paddling forum to pay for it.

Thanks, both. Irfanview doesn't seem to be for macs but I'm sure there's something equivalent. Just an annoying extra step and I'm wondering how people deal with firing off a quick map screengrab or something in answer to questions.

A couple of examples of other forums that I use that don't seem to have this issue, and that I'm guessing don't have much more of an operating budget than myCCR... there's the Algonquin Adventures board, which I know has a lot of membership overlap with this forum, where it seems that images are automatically resized or something, not totally sure how it works but it seems pretty seemless. And I've also used the Ontario Shore Fishing Forum, less user overlap but I'd say it's a much smaller membership on that one, and over there it seems images are loaded full size but then reduced to 800 pixels wide with a message saying the original dimensions and to click for full size... sort of a happy medium between a thumbnail and only being able to see a small corner. Here is an example of a thread on that forum with images, since most such threads would be in the Reports subforum which isn't viewable to non-members.

I'm not very techie so I don't have a great understanding of what this kind of feature involves on a technical level, it just seems like a barrier that doesn't exist on seemingly equivalent forums and I'm wondering if there's a fix.

The forum software that we use (phpbb) does not automatically resize pictures to fit & if we allow much larger, the photos are too huge to actually be able to view.

We for sure don't have the budget to hire a phpbb specialist who can add special software to phpbb software. Different types of forum software have different features. Free resizing software that I really like is Fastsone Resizer.

Another option for posting routes on CCR is to post them to the database instead of in the forums - Add Your Route - http://www.myccr.com/node/add/addyourroute - by doing this you add your route to our permanent database. You can add as many pics as you want & they only need to be less than 2 MB. In addition you can add your gps tracks, which will display on a google map & many other things.

Thanks for the explanation marscanoe. I'll play with those options.
