Personally I would suggest either the Missinabi, or Wabakimi. The Miss (once you get on the river) has very short and flat portages, and by god, you'll get lost in the history of it. The logistics of paddling the Miss - at least the upper Miss - are daunting right now, but worth it. On the lower Miss the logistics are far simpler, if you leave yourself a few days on each end of the trip. On the other hand, the possibilities in Wabakimi are endless. I was there last year and had to deal with the VIA train cancellations, so had to replan half the trip; and replanning it was relatively easy, given all the options I had there. We even got lucky and paddled it at the height of Covid so all the fishing and hunting outposts were shut down. Then again, on the other hand, I've long hoped to paddle the Winsk. Not easy or cheap getting in or out, but from what I've heard, worth it. I would suggest either the Miss (the upper Miss I think - I've never paddled the Lower Miss but I hear it's rather boring, and let's not forget, it's through the James Bay Lowlands), or Wabakimi. Wabakimi in summer is quite something. The sun doesn't fully set until midnight. And there's plenty of other options around Wabakimi - ask RHaslam for details. |

I maintain a facebook page for routes in the Greenstone areas. All maps can be found in the "files" section. https://www.facebook.com/groups/2430359543862050 |

I used the campsite locs shown on their route maps plus sat pix to plan our route. We did not follow any of their suggested routes . BTW, we did meet a group going up thru the Zec to start a trip down the Dumoine. |
