I will have to do a few more videos - I have a tonne of gear that was gotten from the thrift store. In this case it was the first time i'd ever seen this style of jacket in wool so I grabbed it right up. Been wearing it about a week now just around town and it is amazing. Pretty sure judging by the tag it was brand new never used. Best 17 bucks I ever spent on wool that's for sure!

Picked up a little 500ml or so steel pot yesterday. Not sure exactly what I'll do with it but will find something and I'm pretty sure 50cents isn't overpaying too much.

At a garage sale my wife alerted me to a strange looking backpack and asked what it was for. Once I caught my breath I grabbed that Ostrom harness and went to hand over the$10. The lady said "Do you know how much I paid for that?" I said " Yes I do. "

I have to admit that when it comes to clothes some "thrift" stores can have major bargains. Over the years I've bought brand new Columbia and Tilly pants for under $20 (normally priced $80+). Brand new as in they still have the tags on them. People probably give them as gifts and they never fit, so they sit around for awhile then get donated.

I've also get polartech fleece and once in a blue moon some merino wool stuff. I am a little leary of the fleece and wool. If people have washed them wrong then they will lose some of their effectiveness. I've never found any gear, I keep thinking that someday I'll find that $200 knife for $10 or something like that.

Yeah I've not gotten a lot of gear either though I have gotten a few things. This old Coleman military medical stove was a pretty neat find for 5 bucks!

I've gotten a few coleman double burner stoves. Some XC skis. Ski boots. A few sleeping bags.

That stove is pretty neat. There's one for sale on e-bay right now for a lot. They describe it as a "Military Dental Stove for Sterilization." As you mentioned in your video, putting a pot on top of that fuel tank might be a bit risky; but I wonder if dentists used it differently.

I also found it interesting that it is designed for unleaded gasoline. Was that even common before the 1980's?

Yeah I know it is worth quite a lot and mine still has the box and is in perfect shape even with all the spare parts in the little tube. Not really worth it to sell unless it shot up to over $1000 maybe. Pretty good for 5 bucks though!

I'm not aware of any way to wash either to lose effectiveness. With wool if you put it in the regular wash and dry cycle it will shrink and felt it, but felted wool is still incredibly effective. It will just be a much smaller size now.

Fleece I don't know of any way to wash it to affect it negatively in any manner.

I wash all my wool on the delicate cycle with regular detergent (I use light unscented detergent for everything similar to "Nellies") and I let it air dry. Fleece I wash and dry with everything else. I always dry on high.

My wife used to volunteer at a thrift store. Thrift store volunteers get first shot at everything that comes in. She found this giant Orvis duffle bag for $5.

I just remembered this photo album I'd started about 4 years ago - ha ha added a couple of things at the time and then forgot about it. The blue and yellow snow pants are amongst my best finds. Both are MEC brand and the blue is side L and the yellow XL. Both were mint condition almost never used and $17 each. A buddy of mine says he bought a pair exactly like that for his wife for close to $300 taxes in. That was like 15 years ago or something but they are still incredible pants today. The yellow pair are still packed away and never used by me but I've really ridden those blue ones pretty hard and they are still in fantastic condition.

And I haven't worn the Ralph Lauren wool sweater since then either it is also packed away. I'll have to get that one into circulation this winter that is a great sweater especially since it is a large percentage Alpaca

I just scored some free heavy duty 4 canoe trees for a canoe trailer for free off kijiji.

And when I got there we got talking and he said he's got the trailer for it down in Kingston. We got to talking more and I might be able to provide him closer storage for his trailer in exchange for use of the trailer. But the trees are still mine either way!

I'm going to build a base in the yard to hold 2 canoes and the trees, so then six total. So the trees will be movable back and forth to the trailer.

As we arrived at a garage sale a women who was running it for her daughter said “nothing is marked, just ask me for prices”. I found a Therm-a-Rest that looked like new and asked the women “how much for the yoga mat?”. She replied three dollars. My wife about lost it when I asked if she would take two.

Woodsy ... LMAO, I have done the exact same thing. Remind your wife we are guys, thats what we do.

Pros ... when it comes too merino & fleece washing them in a "tech" wash (merino more than fleece) is a good habit too get in. Definitely prolongs the life of the fabric(s). I use NikWax Tech for merino, Polar Proof on fleece and TX Direct on my rain gear. Could be overkill but I think everything has stayed relatively new.
