I'm looking unsuccessfully for a source of permethrin here in Canada. Does anybody have a link? Also, has anybody tried Icaridin based products?

I have bought the 10% solution and mixed my own the last few years. It isn't cheap as prices have gone up the last few years. Shipping is the killer. Gets through customs fine for me though.

I bought an aerosol can at an outfitter store in downtown Kingston 2 years ago. Name of it slips my mind. It was a bit of an old school place with actually army surplus stuff not a fancy pants name brand joint. Should be hard to google it around.

Found it, smiths army surplus. https://www.sasonline.ca/ not listed online, decent store.

I wasn't able to source the liquid kind and my ankles were getting attacked that summer. Worked fine, will find some liquid and cut down too. I've read you want to avoid ones with 'petroleum distilate' or something such. A smelly version. They have it around for livestock but add the stinko so we don't protect ourselves from little critters. Strange place by times.

I ordered from ebay as well, found there was a wide variety in prices and shipping between vendors and I just needed to sift through a number of different ones to find a reasonable choice, in my case turned out to be a pet store in Jacksonville. As noted, there is need to be aware of whether the solvent is water or petroleum based if you buy the liquid concentrate, but I've also seen precisely one anecdotal report that the petroleum distillate didn't leave much residue of an odor at least for treating clothes, so mileage may vary accordingly.

Yup. Shipping is dear. Good to know that it is available though.

I do recall buying a pyrethrin spray a couple of decades ago here in Ontario. I can see banning pyrethrins on a commercial scale due to their effect on the birds and the bees (and the flowers and the trees?), but IMO it should be available for personal use as I can't see personal use on clothes & skin affecting wildlife.

Anybody tried Icaridin for ticks yet?

Here is an opinion piece that sums it up nicely -

https://canadianrockiestrailguide.com/t ... hypocrisy/

We've been treating our canoe tripping clothes with permethrin for the past five years, using either the Sawyer product or diluting a large container of 10% permetrhin my brother picked up in a visit to a farm supply store in Ohio. The Sawyer spray contains .5% permetrhin.

Mark's Wearhouse has a selection of clothing treated with Burlington's proprietory No Fly Zone, a .51% permetrhin treatment.

There's a spray we get at the CO-OP called Vetchem. Although the amount of permethrin in it is minute.

A salesman at MEC told me and another customer yesterday that permethrin and pyrethrin are neurotoxins, even if sprayed on clothes, and it would be better not to bother with it. I wasn't sure of this, so I checked it out. Here is what Wikipedia has to say about it: According to the Connecticut Department of Public Health, permethrin "has low mammalian toxicity, is poorly absorbed through the skin, and is rapidly inactivated by the body. ... Excessive exposure to permethrin can cause nausea, headache, muscle weakness, excessive salivation, shortness of breath, and seizures.

Since permethrin/pyrethrin is not readily available, I bought a Watkins spray with Icaridin. I'll keep my eyes open for a source of the good stuff here in Canada.

My personal feeling is that the risk level is lower for permethrin/pyrethrin than it is for lyme disease from ticks.

Is permethrin better insect deterrent than deet?

Unlike deet, it's not a repellent but rather an insecticide - i.e. it kills insects on contact. It goes on your clothes, not your skin.

I have read of people getting a product like the one in the photo below (from a store like TSC if there's one around you), then diluting it to the "correct" amount to use for clothing.

These products are available to treat livestock.

My clothes drying after being soaked before my spring trip. Will do it again in July.

Be sure to keep the solution and the wet clothes away from cats. Exposure to even small quantities of concentrated permethrin can cause severe and fatal poisoning in cats.

The permetrhin my brother got in Ohio was also from a TSC outlet. It was a 10% solution. We diluted it to .5% strength - i.e. 1 ounce of the permethrin from the container with 19 ounces of water.

Here is a link to the tractor Supply Co. store locator. It looks like there are at least a couple of dozen outlets in Ontario. One of these containers will probably last you a decade or more!
