What’s everybody using for solo trips as cooking/bug shelters in the areas with limited trees (above the tree line)? I’ve used the mantis in these areas with great success on trips with partners, however next years trip is solo and am looking for other commercially available options that aren’t so bulky.
Thinking of building my own smaller “mantisish” structure or modifying a tent. I like a challenge, but would rather spend my time looking at maps. :D

I always keep the poles from worn out tents with the idea of using them with bug netting.

I just use an old tent with lots of meshing, throw away the fly and it is under 2lbs,

So here’s where I’m at. I’ve decided to modify a big Agnes whetstone shelter (small) into a mantisish style bug shelter. Lil bit of Velcro, some bug netting, maybe a zipper and gonna add some skirting to the bottom where it meets the ground for digging in or rocking down. Lots of reinforcing of the stakeout points and pole loops.
Does anybody have any leads on some higher quality bug netting. Just need a little bit.
Thx

Looking forward to seeing your updates.

For screening, this is a good outfit and you have a couple of mesh options.
