As for lots of lightly used choices for a fraction of the price..I've been looking pretty hard and haven't had much luck in finding anything lightly used for a decent price.

Finding the right canoe at the right price sometimes means a road trip. I live in northern Maryland and drove to Connecticut for one boat, and to South Carolina for another, both semi-unicorn canoes at a reasonable price. The downside was that the sellers knew I wasn’t driving that far to dicker over price.

We sold three of our tandem canoes last year, one to a Canoe Club friend from Virginia, one to a buyer from Boston and one to a nice couple from Ontario, who drove down twice. They looked at the boat, hemmed and hawed and drove home empty handed. I was stunned when they drove away without it. And less surprised when they called to say they would return the next weekend with cash in hand.

The Outdoors show is in two weeks, Feb 21 weekend at the international center in Miississauga on Airport Road and Derry. All the top builders and dealers will be there in one spot which will save you lots of driving around from dealer to dealer or factories.

The London Boat, fishing and outdoor show is the same weekend which I was planning on checking out.

A correction, we have actually bought a total of three new canoes. I forgot that the first two decent quality canoes we ever owned were bought were at the Jersey Paddler show. There was a pond nearby for test paddling and the manufacturers had demo canoes available.

Afternoon on the last day of the show we drove up with another young family who were likewise looking to buy a pair of family canoes and test paddled a bunch of canoes. We ended up liking the same two tandem canoes as parent and child boats (OT Camper and Pathfinder, perfect family canoes bow backwards with one adult and a small kid up front).

Last day of the show we told the OT rep we were interested in buying “some” canoes. Four canoes. He cut us a healthy discount on two new boats and a huge discount on two demo canoes. I think he mostly didn’t want to load them and drive them back to Maine.
If nothing else a boat show is a good opportunity to eyeball a bunch of new canoes and talk to the reps. Although bringing your roof racks might make it awfully hard to leave without a canoe.
