I'm looking for replacement for my Granite Gear Ultralight canoe pack liner - after 7 years of use it finally started sipping in water. Granite Gear has discontinued this item and the only replacement I know about is made by Ostrom Outdoors - I own one of their liners as well. It's very reliable and very large heavy duty liner, which is what I'm looking for, but it comes at a weight premium of 70% compared to ultalight GG bag (12oz against 7). Not a big deal, but still for portaging single-carry it makes difference... I wonder if somebody can recommend anything as light as GG bag, which weighs 7oz for XL size (120L).

Try Duluth pack liners? They may have the size you need, they have lasted good in my packs.

Thank you, sure - Duluth has #4 liner for perfect fit, but it's heavy. I do not suffer from ounce-intolerance, but on solo trips my pack being on a better side of the 60lbs mark, well - it makes me count.

I have been using http://www.seatosummitusa.com/product/? ... Pack+Liner with my Ostrom Wabakimi its great very large but I hardly use it. I just put everything in small dry bags and just stuff it into the pack usually... only my clothing and sleeping bag get double dry baged.

Sea to Summit looks good, but they don't make it in XL size, 95L is the max. Packing everything in separate dry bags takes too much volume in my opinion. Most importantly there is a good chance of some of these bags being punctured by many not-so-soft items I carry on a trip. I prefer one dry bag enclosing one tough nylon sack with all the gear inside it.

When I bought it I was planning on doing week long loop trips and that sadly has not happened yet still working out the logistics with the girlfriend

Eddy Turn do you double dry bag anything?

I pack wet sensitive stuff in small dry bags and then all in an Ostrom dry bag pack liner. Double insurance.

Rawcardo, I think I follow more or less same scheme as lrc does: 2 small dry bags for sleeping bag and clothing, each of them goes inside a small nylon sack for mechanical protection. Everything else is kept in 4-5 stuff sacks for easy access. Then all gear goes inside a large nylon sack, it goes inside a large dry bag, it goes inside canoe pack. Plus lots of zip lock bags for stuff like TP, notebook, maps etc.

Hey Eddy ... if your somewhat handy with a sewing machine you could always make one. I've made pack liners for all my backpacks and they work great. I've used 1.1oz Silnylon and 1.1oz Silpoly. As for weight they would be grams.

I order my stuff from Ripstop by the Roll, who are GREAT to deal with

Off-topic but... Rawcardo, you can make one of these with a medium size ziploc freezer bag. Just pull the cardboard tube out of the middle of a roll of toilet paper and it'll squeeze nicely into the bag. Instead of using from the outside of the roll pull paper from the centre. This way you don't have to remove the roll from the bag. Works great in the rain!

Hey Eddy. Here's what I don't get. You've got a 90-100L pack, which, packed out is going to be somewhere between 50 and 80 lb. So why sweat over 8 oz give or take (less than 1% of the total weight)? I have a Sea to Summit pack liner and they are chintzy thin. They work but a pack liner to be really useful has to take abuse. I also have two Ostrom liners and that's my idea of a pack liner. I bought them 4 or 5 years ago to replace the Granite Gear ones I had that had given up the ghost. The Ostrom liners are superior in every way. My advice - don't sweat the weight, it's such small potatoes. Remember, you're not backpacking where every ounce could matter. You're canoe packing where most of the time the pack is in the canoe not on your back.

@KerryG I agree that Ostrom's is more sturdy than GG, but it doesn't make GG bad. It worked for me for 7 years or so. And if I don't "sweat" about ounces my potatoes will weight 70lbs instead of 65. Still manageable? Yes. But where I am I'd better think about my back. As for your calculations of how much time my pack is on my back: we are obviously canoeing different countries.
