This information was buried in a thread under Maps, Navigation & GPS, but I thought it was valuable enough to post here as well. The site contains all the Topographical Maps of Canada (that exist). As neat as sites like Toporama are to play with, this contains all the 50000:1 maps -- stuff that you'd actually use on a trip.

http://ftp2.cits.rncan.gc.ca/pub/canmatrix/

Navigate through the 50k_300dpi directory to find the map you want, uncompress the zip file, and open the tif file and that's your map (example - 50k_300dpi/031/e/10 is Canoe Lake in AP).

Please thank Darl-h for sharing this with us.

Sidenote, if ccr was very abitious, they could combine these maps with canoe route information gathered from members here and create an amazing route database, something like Charles Leduc is doing on his site (http://www.cartespleinair.org./).

Thought it would be useful here.

And thx to Robertm, who originally posted the info on that thread.

These maps print out nicely on 24 x 36" roll stock. There are however some in color like the ones around Lake Nipigon. I am in the process of FTP'ing most of the database.

Thanks

Barry

Added alpha-numeric index and link to 'key maps'.

Rapt,
Are you sure? I was just on the Natural Resources Canada website and did not se how to download free topos. (I know about Toporama, but I understood from your post that regular 1:25000 can now be downlaoded)

1:250k and 1:50k raster topos
NRC main download directory

Those are neat, thanks all for pointing out.

Toporama actually can get down to the 1:50000 scale maps, and weld them togather seamlessly. You just need to look at it at 1:40000 or better--and the 1:50000 detail pops out.

Now that the full topographic maps can be downloaded for free, I would think that the limited graphic toporama maps would have no purpose. Their primary value was that they were free even if they did lack many land feature details.

So why even bother with the toporamas any more?

As far as I can tell, Toporama has all of the features that the printed maps have. It may even be more up to date--and adjoining quads fit more seamlessly-- i.e. all metric. You just need to play with the scale and check "show contours" At about 1:200,000, you get all of the non topographic features of the 1:250,000 maps. At about 1:120,000 you get the contours as well. At 1:40,000, you get all of the features of the 1:50,000 maps.

As a demonstration, here is a link to a random place in the Yukon Territory:

Pardon me,
I now see that toporama has changed or added an interactive user-selectable format using what appears to be a topographic base. Interesting addition.

How does one get the entire 1:50,000 map from this little interactive bit?
For example, I'm doing the Bloodvein this July and want to download 52M06 how would I do this in interactive Toporama?

thanks Ted

Ted,
There's a tool bar at the top that allows you to zoom in and out, recenter etc

Thanks Wotrock,

but show me in the toolbar how to get the entire 1:50,000 map at that I can save.
Preferably one with lat/long and/or UTM grids, map datum and compass declination - like real maps have.

Go to Toporama, type in your map number, or use one of the other search functions. Change the scale to 1:40000. Change the size to XL. This will give you about a quarter of the sheet. Right click on the map. Do "save as" It will then download a "gif" image to your computer. Move down the river. Save again etc. I usually name each image 1.gif, 2.gif etc. Right click on the scale marker, save it too.

This has advantages and disadvantages over the printed map. You can print custom size and shapes on waterproof paper. You can make notes on the map. The resulting maps probably will not be as clear as the printed ones. Cost is probably a toss up. I don't see any way to print a grid. But you can use the identify function on the tool bar to very accurately (within 30 meters) identify POINTS, which you can then label on your map.

You can use a program such as Microsoft Paint to paste the sheets together, add labels, and paste your scale back in. The map datum and declination don't print either, but you can just make a note.

Practically speaking, what I do is plot my route out using the 1:120000 scale, which shows the contours from the 1:250000 maps. I then print out a flip book at about 1:200000 on waterproof paper, punch a hole in it and tie it to the boat in easy reach. I get the 1:50000 maps in paper and put them in a safe place deep in a dry bag--and typically only refer to them once or twice.

You can do much the same with the down loadable complete maps--but they are in tif format, and huge so they are more likely to choke up your computer--they are also not formated for computer clarity--so the odds are you will have more trouble printing them.

Sorry but that seems like a whole lot of work that really isn't necessary.

I have an older computer with less than a gig of ram and I don't find working with entire nts topographic maps in tiff format that big of a deal.

So I think I'll just stick to ftp'ing the complete topographic maps.

To each their own I guess and thanks for pointing out the toporama changes.
cheers
Ted
