Just to add my 2 cents to the discussion, I looked through the thread, and I swear I didn't see it mentioned yet.

But the Ontario MNR sells 1:10,000 topo maps.
I'm not sure if the other provinces do the same, but I love these things myself.

Has anyone downloaded the whole directory yet ? If so, how large is the whole shebang ? I'd love to burn these all to DVD's, I'd just like to know in advance how many I'll need.

As far as I can tell, Toporama has all of the features that the printed maps have. It may even be more up to date--and adjoining quads fit more seamlessly-- i.e. all metric. You just need to play with the scale and check "show contours" At about 1:200,000, you get all of the non topographic features of the 1:250,000 maps. At about 1:120,000 you get the contours as well. At 1:40,000, you get all of the features of the 1:50,000 maps.

As a demonstration, here is a link to a random place in the Yukon Territory:
http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/m ... a_ntdb_50k

One big caveat, though:
toporama, as far as I have seen in my limited exploration of its representation of Frontenac PP and area, gets stuff wrong; elevations are misrepresented, no valleys shown where I know there to be one, imaginary bodies of water where I know there not to be ones anymore, islands shown as peninsulas, the contours of lakes are wrong in places, making looking for take-outs a bit harder(you're looking for a little cove that is on the map but doesn't exist in real life)...little things when you're day-tripping; potential Murphys if you're in the boonies and are planning your packing based on the info from the maps...

Careful, one earthquake and your data is no good!

Aren't the online top maps at NR Canada's website taken from the same data that's used to print paper top maps?

I agree, though, that top maps can be misleading... I've planned trips on top maps and then used air photos to provide finer detail, and have been surprised at how different the features appear on the air photo.

I need a Topo and tried to use:
http://ftp2.cits.rncan.gc.ca/pub/canmatrix/
This is the site give on the first post of this tread.
It looks dead to me. Any idea what happened? Am I doing something wrong?

Same here - maybe they have some major maintenance going. You could try later in the weekend....
If it's an Ontario trip you are planning, this may help you now:

No, many of the (sort of) non-public Federal Government sites go dark over the weekend.

Not sure if it's maintenance or just nobody around to reboot the servers.

Oh dear, oh dear!

If you go to http://toporama.ctis.rncan.gc.ca/ you will see this message:

"Web page not found
(Error 404)

We apologize...

January 15th, 2009 - Please take note that Toporama (http://toporama.cits.rncan.gc.ca) web interface is definitely closed. However for those who have access directly to the image files this will still be possible until March 31st, 2009. We encourage you to use the Toporama version find on the Atlas of Canada.

A new raster product named Toporama is accessible on GeoGratis and available for downloads by complete 1;50,000 tile.

For more information, please contact us"

I haven't explored the GeoGratis link yet, but it doesn't sound good ;-(

You don't need to worry....it's all there!

http://www.geogratis.gc.ca/geogratis/en ... anned.html

That's the main download page, the back end data link is not accessible at the moment but I'm sure it will be back on Monday.

I was able to download a toporoma from gratis this morning.
Basically geogratis, english, all collections, T, toporama

http://www.geogratis.ca/geogratis/en/product/search.do?id=36765

I don't anymore because of the free topographical maps available
at http://ftp2.cits.rncan.gc.ca/pub/canmatrix/

The ftp2 site is back up and running. I've seen this site down a lot of times during weekends and holidays.

fwiw,
ted

For the first time, I'm going to plan a trip. With all the confusion about soft-copy topo maps, I'm going to visit MEC if they have any printed topo maps c/w gridline, trails, campsites and compass declination.

I'm going to have to get through the learning curve.

I may buy and load Garmin topo as a backup. On the last trip I noticed the Garmin North America map I had was missing islands, swamps and creeks. It was a street map afterall although it did have some topo details in other parks I visited.
