Made this map a few months ago to identify where true, virtually untouched wilderness still remains in Ontario. The output raster is the result of ten criteria that were used to illustrate human impact (details in the full-res copy).

Recreational trail data was one of the criteria because these do contribute to human impact, so places like Algonquin with a lot of trails are evaluated as less wild as a result. The aim of the map is to find places with NO trace of human activity, so this had to be considered.

Mostly intuitive, but some interesting areas. Also potentially useful for identifying dark sky areas.

This is such a great map. I enjoyed looking at the high res version and seeing how far you have to go to truly get remote. My one issue that I have with the map is the shading that you used to show the coverage area of provincial parks. I find that opaque white make it difficult to see your results. I can make it out, but not as well as non PP areas. I would've just traced the boundary of the PP, and not fill it in.

All in all, really enjoyed cruising through this map though.

Super cool.

A very well done concept and map.

Great map.

Have you considered using the story map options in ArcGIS online to show this? You could bring in photos showing examples of the various landscapes to show the difference between levels of development.

Thanks folks!

Dadadrop, totally agree at this resolution and size, an outline would be much better. The full res PDF is designed to be printed poster size so it renders much better...looks more like a window pane. Anyway, good cartographic advice!

Chris, you must be a GIS'er too. That would make a really cool Story Map but Esri products are expensive :(

Esri offer cheap not for profit licences- $100 annually and some of the online products are free, you just pay for data storage.

That's true. Well worth $100/yr really.

You could consider swapping the positions of the northeast and northwest zoomed in sections so that the northeast is on the right side and northwest on the left.
