Great thanks Jonathan. I definitely have time to watch the intro video.

I'll give it a try hopefully on the weekend.

Yeah that is built right into google maps. You have a choice of about a dozen base maps and any google map you see online lets you choose between them.

The Google maps that I see just have 2 views---street map and satellite. Is there a newer version?

Yeah that looks like the only options with a published map.
but when you are making a map you have more options

Hey folks I am looking for more help on getting some specific data. I had to take the maps offline that I had created with the data from Paddle Planner - because of the ads on my site I am a "commercial site" and not allowed to use that data.

I want to find out where he got his Algonquin campsite and portage data. Does anyone know?

My alternative is to take Jeff's map online and enter every single campsite and portage manually the same way I did with the La Verendrye map, but I'd really rather not have to resort to that.

The trails files I sent you a couple of weeks ago should have some Algonquin routes, no? As for campsites and POIs, you might have some manual labour ahead of you.

Thanks for the reminder - I have to take another look at those files now that I have a Mac I can run the software one.

I know Paddle Planner got the data originally as public data but then did a considerable amount of cleanup on it. So it has to be out there somewhere. I also emailed Friends of Algonquin to see if they have any. Have not yet heard back.

I suspect Jeff's Maps and Unlostify are also using the same source data. I know it is out there (cut to X-Files theme song)

I have had good experiences with the Ontario Base Map data. They have a nice narrow contour interval but are optimistic about open water.

You can download digital data in various formats from

http://www.geographynetwork.ca/website/obm/viewer.htm.

I generally download shape files and use them in the Quantum GIS (QGIS) program. There is useful advice at

https://www.igismap.com/convert-shapefile-kml-qgis/.

I hope this helps.

Don
