I am thinking about this one as a GPS among other functions. Still looking at the specs and capabilities. A 'full size' tablet is a bit big for a trip and is hard to protect from water and hard knocks. I think there must be waterproof cases to fit this one. Comments?

wotrock, while the Amazon Fire is wi-fi enabled it does not have GPS.

Here are some that do have GPS -

I bought one for a city trip over the pond last fall that was very uncanoe backcountry. It's a cheap and frustrating little device. Does a lot for the money but keeps reminding you that while 1/10 the price it isnt a little ipad to use.

I believe the amazon fire 7 has a gps chip. From googling around it tells me by default it's turned off. There's a number of slightly confusing work arounds(the thing works by work around's, remember it's 50$ sighs) Here's one line of thinking.

Since then Apple's updated the little pad. I wasn't going to spend full price on several year old thing. I'll see if I can get mine to do the backcountry map dance and report in. With return privilege(best buy had) you might give it a go. I bought for some current city things but will try the aggravation of it. Like you said would be bigger screen than a real gps.

Thx for the comments, guys.

Could you elaborate on why it's frustration. One of the limitations that has been mentioned is that it does not have easy access to Google Play but I have seen a detailed description of how to fix that and it doesn't look too complicated.

I don't find the touch screen works anywhere as well as my old ipad. You keep poking and fighting. The google play downloads were easy enough. It lags a bit with response times. Everything just seems a bit of a laboured event instead of just happening. Nothings where it should be lol. I bought it to fit in a little bag for a walking around a city and such, so it works for it but just overall not a joyful thing more grudging.

My cell phone with Avenza maps (free topos...even works with Jeff's maps) does everything a GPS does, with less effort.
