New Advanced Tools and Tips for Android and iOS were posted on YouTube several days ago... the Android vid seems to be a recording of a public presentation, rather than something made specifically for online viewers. Jeff's maps and the regular CanTopo top maps are available free with Avenza, for anybody wanting to use a phone's GPS to track location in remote areas with no service.

PS... I'll be the first to admit I don't want to look at screens while out there, I've been putting this off for far too long. Feel free to jump in and comment.

Nice. Avenza Maps is the best. Custom maps, free maps, simple point and track recording, great interface, and easy exporting (gpx, kml, csv in the free version).

I hate being connected, but I don't mind looking at the screen.

We use it at work (forestry management) too alongside Garmin GPS units which are archaic by comparison.

I can already get Can Topos, Sat Pix with "Find Friends". It looks like I would need to pay for Avenza. Apart from having JeffMaps, Idon't see any benefit for me. Am I missing something here?

Everything that I want seems to be available free on Avenza... although I sure haven't checked out all the possibilities, and other map providers. Running Google maps and sat photos offline wasn't the best on my phone so I tried another source. What's Find Friends?

I looked like I'd have to pay to use Avenza, but it did offer a free trial.

Find Friends is a free app for Iphones/pads that shows sat pix. You may need a data plan to use--not sure.

I found Avenza to be pretty great. I don't believe I ever had to spend anything for it? The maps I use most (Jeff's, Jon Kelly's, and Brad's QE2) are all free.

I like to keep a journal, take photo's and sometimes read a book on my phone already when I'm out, and having a decent gps + map that I can use as a reference with journals, photo's and trip notes has been great.

It is certainly 10x easier and 100x faster to use them my Garmin etrex!

Can someone give me a TL:DR on what this is all about? I use a GPS for most of my backcountry trips because good topos are hard to find in paper form.

What does this do for me that my GPS won't??

This might help... phones are being recommended by some for outdoor use over traditional GPS devices... see the report below, it's for another provider besides Avenza and for backpackers but the general idea is there. There are also the multiple-use functions that a smartphone will provide if you want to go light... GPS, maps, camera, phone where there's service, e-books, and whatever else all in one device. Some phones are waterproof or water-resistant as well.

PS... there are other threads in this folder posted earlier on with more info.. rpg51's thread ending with MartinG's use out in the field.

“good topos are hard to find in paper form. ”

My local government map office sells paper topo maps.
An online site such as mytopo makes it easy to order custom paper topo maps.

OK, to answer my own question and ask another one__ Apparently Avenza allows you to 'make tracks'as well as telling where you are right now. That's an advantage over other apps that I know of.

I tried to download (for free) but got a msg that I would need IOS 11 or later. I understand that if I do that it will slow down my device. Is that true? thx

Probably best to contact Avenza on this matter (using Android myself)... and read through "When contacting Avenza Support" to have the needed info on your device before emailing.

http://help.avenzamaps.com/

PS... this page also has various help articles showing how to use Avenza... reading through some of these should move things farther along, maybe better than the tutorials shown on the first post.

I *think* Apple stopped doing that. They had intentionally been slowing older devices with the excuse of not putting as much demand on the older batteries. They got busted publicly and there was enough noise that I think now they give a 'recommendation' and an option to reduce power demand but don't just do it automatically.

Worth looking into if you get install iOS 11
Otherwise look into installing an old version of Avenza.

You could try here: https://pdf-maps.en.aptoide.com/versions

or here: https://www.apk4fun.com/history/143608/

A tip for this type of situation, Google "-program name- older version download", you can often find older versions of programs that way, sometimes from the official program site (but hidden) or from third-party sites that archive the older versions.
