Prepping for the upcoming season? Are you doing a spring gear room clean-up? looking at poor unused canoe packs looking to find a new home with someone who will love it as much (or more than you do)? Well, you are in luck I might be your guy!

All kidding aside, I'm still looking for an Ostrom Portage Specialist pack (there were 2 sizes, I'm not picky). I know it's a long shot, but I'm sure someday one will surface somewhere for me. I'm also interested in any other Osrtom gear as well. Let me know if you have anything you're willing to part with, trying to outfit my kids as well :)

Do you currently have any Ostrom gear? I’m guessing you know that the Wabakimi is available again. Maybe if you’re lucky Bill will revive the Portage Specialist as well. I have one, and it’s a great little pack. Well designed and built to last. Good luck!

Yes sir! I have ALOT of Ostrom gear (I may have a bit of a problem if I'm being honest, it's a pretty extensive collection.) I did talk to Bill when he released the packs last year, and at that time it did not sound like there were plans to expand the line. That could change of course and would be fantastic if it did. I know it's a long shot, but I figure if I throw this up here from time to time someone like yourself might be ready to part with one they have knowing that it's going to someone who will use it for what it's meant to be used for. As I said long shot but has worked out for me in the past.

Have you thought about contacting Chris Randall to make you something similar?

It's going to take me a while to recover from the stress of making yours, though one piece packs are usually simpler.

Recreation Barrel Works make an outstanding expedition portage pack. It’s really nice, durable, big, compression straps, excellent main compartment closure system, comfortable to carry, and a pretty decent price…I paired mine with a dry sack and got a slight discount.

Just an idea.

Sam

Sam you can Google this pack to see what it is. It’s not a regular issue portage pack. There isn’t any comparable on the market.

There isn't anything currently on the market like this pack. Personally, as nice as the RBW packs are, the Ostrom Packs are the custom build of the pack world. Well made, Comfortable to carry, and damn near indestructible. To me getting the correct tool for the job is the only way to go, and with that, I won't settle for second best. I know I keep bumping this thread, and it's somewhat unlikely it will pan out to get me the pack I'm after, but I keep trying. I know they are some out there and when someone is ready to part with it. I want to be the new home. It's safe to say I'm a bit of a collector and with that, I won't setle for anything other than exactly what I'm looking for.

don't know if you're doing it but posting across multiple forums, and used stuff sites, will increase your odds by many times. this is a rare extinct pack, and highly valued by those who own it. odds are against obtaining one. even finding a specific modern pack can take a long, long time (second hand). stating how much $ you're willing to spend might also instigate responses that otherwise don't happen.

All good advice and I have been doing most of it. It has panned out for me in the past as I have a number of unique packs. I as always I'm more than willing to pay fair market value, deciding price any more than that has to many factors, but I rarely argue on price.

If I found the right pack on the internet which I believe I did, there are some cottage country industries in the states that may produce something similar. I’ve been looking at dyneema packs with waterproof seams. There are some great options out there if you are willing to pay.
