Neat, that walk over the clear ice. But what's that white gash on the mountside: a large rock slide or something else?

That's a landslide. There are many slides (about 60 worth climbing) in the Adirondacks.

Here's a pic taken while climbing that slide last December.

This pic shows nearly the whole slide and you can see the pond (thin blue line) directly above the hiker's head near the top of the photo.
