This past winter we rented a waterfront cottage for 3 months on a small lake surrounded by rolling hills, ponds and swamps. We got out every Saturday and Sunday for day-long hikes through trail-less country without seeing anybody else all day.

It was interesting to see the same areas over and over again but in continuously varying conditions. It was fun building up a network of trails only to have to start all over again after the next dump.

Fifty-eight pictures to riffle through.

Real nice Neil. I am lucky to live year round North of Montreal and relived some of the snowshoeing we do through your beautiful photos.
Thanks
GG

What a chance to learn and enjoy - that's "Nature University"!

Thanks for posting.

Very nice group of photos. Must have taken you a long time to "pick and choose".

My favourites are #16 and #43.

Are those osprey nests in 33, 36, and 37?

I think so. Anyway we named the swamp, Osprey Lake.

We named a lot of features. The 5 Metatarsals for a route that crosses 5 ribs of land, Mount Manitoba, Osprey Lake etc.

Thanks for posting Neil! Its getting too hot here already, but those photos cooled me down, and and I am looking forward to winter already!
In photo 36 I think those are great blue heron nests.

Snowshoeing in the bush off trail is one of life's great pleasures. You can traverse country, cross beaver ponds, walk across lakes, skim over swamps, and get up above the underbrush and just go.

Google images thinks you're right.

Re: winter travel: we often talked about how we would have to modify our routes if we continued to explore the area throughout the year.
