Hi all,

Hoping to head out for a winter backcountry trip in a few weekends. Nothing major, just a night or two at the Mew Lake airfield.

I’m starting to plan the logistics and while looking at gear transport options, I’m looking at how nicely my blue barrels would sit in the pulk I’ve got. I’m not sure if this is unorthodox but I’m wondering if anyone has experience using blue canoeing barrels for winter camping. I know some plastics aren’t always cold resistant so I’m a bit worried about the barrels potentially cracking if the temperature was too cold.

As long as they wouldn’t be susceptible to cracking, the barrels seem like a good option for transporting my gear in. They’re robust, waterproof and would be easy to lash to the pulk. A 30L barrel in a harness might also make a good system to connect pulk poles to.

I don’t have too many duffle bags to use to transport gear on the pulk but I’ve got a few barrels at my disposal, which is why the idea struck me.

TIA

They'll stand up fine.
Just no big drops or shocks.
Cut a piece of evazote foam to fit on top of the lid for a great seat too.

I use a blue barrel all winter long on the trapline...throw it in skidoo tobaggon or strapped down on a quad at all temps and never had a problem with them. They have taken a pretty good beating bouncing around crossing snowdrifts lakes over the years.
