does anybody have ideas for bait either live or artificial for fall smallmouth. they seem uninterested in just about everything I have after mid/late Aug.

I also had reduced catch towards late summer and fall when I used to fish for SMB in the Parry Sound area... the most productive baits, when SMB were biting, were crayfish, gathered at the same lake by turning over shoreline rocks (there are invasive species out there and transferring crayfish from lake to lake could be a problem).

Here in the Bancroft area, I've found that pike will start biting more often than SMB this time of year as water begins to cool off. I've fished a lake midsummer catching only a few, and returned several weeks later and caught dozens, including some large ones 10-15 pounds.

PS... filleted large pike are much better eating than SMB... good luck!

I also love eating pike...one of my faves. My paddling/fishing buddy blew out his knee awhile ago so I'll be fall fishing solo. I want to stay on a couple of small lakes so wind doesn't become too big a factor and those lakes are very good smallie lakes.

also landing a large pike in a canoe is something I've never done and gives me just a bit of concern. But what the hell I may just head down to the Pickerel/Wolf and take what comes.
