Almost as bad as some ports on popular canoe routes... google claims that the average cost for an expedition is $65,000 so there are piles of money being spent here.

There are so many other ways to prove oneself, ones that contribute to the common good.
Climbing equivalent of river baggers and the like.

I agree, sorta... if it's that popular, that's a reason to stay away. Besides piles of money coming in, there are also piles of garbage being left behind at the base camps.

And corpses.

Where's that Google Earth panorama pic of the base camp that is a small city of tents?

I see only one motivation, ego-building; as for the deaths, TS.
'fraid there's some of that motivation in the paddling and climbing communities too.
For the former, I've heard too often stuff like "Conquer the wilderness", too infrequently stuff like "Respect the wilderness", too infrequently ideas like those of Robert Perkins.

I went only as far as base camp back in 2005, it didn't cost me $65000 either, but I wasn't making a summit attempt, I was just doing a solo hike to base camp in the off season. So, except for two crashed helicopters the trash was virtually nonexistent . Granted I wasn't there during climbing season, in fact there was only one tent in base camp, but at the time they already had the rule that you'll bring back AT LEAST as much as you took up. It actually looked nothing like what they showed in the video (trash-wise), I hope that's still the case.
