That is just sad. I understand that people want to make crafts etc. but why not harvest the whole tree? The MNR lets you harvest trees on crown land for a minimal fee(atleast they did when I asked). Its the right thing to do. Birch trees are very special to me and am pretty sure I'm not alone on this one. I watched a guy on Instagram/YouTube do the same thing to make a basket. He said its fine. Sure if you don't cut the cambium layer. But!!!! Now the tree is vulnerable to insects/animals which LOVE the exposed cambium layer.
