For any of you long rang planners here's food for thought ?

MKC is going to run their first junior solo w/w open canoe ( Splash ) program next year. Claudia has set the date for the second week in August , its during the family week. The instructor kicking this off will be Gail Shields, ORCA 's moving water director. You can bring your own boat or MKC will have rentals. The age of the junior program is open to kids eight to sixteen years of old.

I hope your oldest is a boy because as it stands from what I`m seeing the girls out number the boys almost ten to one as junior w/w canoeist. We need more boys !!!! That said..... its pretty cool seeing these young girls rip up the rivers!

I planted the seed with my wife and "son" yesterday. Our only concern is what to do with our two 4 year old boys while the three of us are paddling. I bought a Sunburst this year to use as an introduction to ww boat for my son. I had planned to paddle with him, and I'm guessing it might be to much boat for him alone. What do you think?

Things might have changed since the last time I talked to Gail Shields about the program but parents will not be on the water with the kids.... you'd be suprised at how much they learn without us fretting about them.

You could make a run of the lower Mad and come back at the end of the day, do some day hikes paddle flatwater.......you could take your own course with your wife(it's family week) I'm not sure what services will be available so I don't know if Claudia has worked out a fee for babysitting or if she's even thought of it?.....any gandmas you could leave the boys with? any children's day camps in Barry's Bay? it's only maybe 20 minutes away?

as for boats I've seen kids paddle a variety of craft....including a 11 year old in a zoom...... get your son to try the Splash they will be available. This is going to sound like a flaming plug, but my now 8 year old spent one summer in this boat and it has been amasing. The boat is extremely stable (she has gotten caught in the boils and spun on waves and loose hips and design have gotten her through) and designed just for kids. It's 8 feet long and has a proper waterline for a youngster....she doesn't feel like she's pushing a tank around. Even if you go with the sunburst...give him the opportunity to grasp the concepts inically during the class without having to adjust for boat size... the youngest can paddle my big boat and her dad's occoe...but she just manages while in her own boat she is confident and can feel just where she is at, surfs small waves and much to my embarasment can side surf small holes better than me.
Gail is pretty excited about teaching kids solo canoeing.... I've taken a class with her in the past and she's very good at one on one and bringing you along at your pace. My two girls are very comfortable with her
