$100,000 FOR WHITEWATER PARK STUDY IN SASKATOON
The Province of Saskatchewan is committing $100,000 to the Whitewater Park Proposal Committee of Saskatoon for the development of pre-feasibility and environmental baseline studies in regards to the concept of a whitewater park facility in Saskatoon.
"A whitewater park in Saskatoon is a unique and exciting proposal," Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Christine Tell said. "The studies are important elements in this proposal. The results will provide insight to government as to what government's role should or could be in this project."
The City of Saskatoon, together with the Whitewater Park Proposal Committee, has been jointly examining the river-use options. The city, through its electrical utility - Saskatoon Light & Power, has been examining the potential of a hydro power facility and, pending City Council approval, will commit $300,000 for the development of associated pre-feasibility and environmental baseline studies in regards to the concept of a hydro power facility in Saskatoon.
The joint study, which is expected to cost approximately $400,000, will highlight community and environmental impacts and will provide greater clarity in regard to potential costs and design considerations for both initiatives.
The whitewater park facility, depending on the actual design chosen, is expected to provide a range of recreational activities including kayaking, rafting and canoeing to local residents, tourists and school groups.
"We are extremely pleased with the provincial government's financial commitment to further study the potential of creating a whitewater park," Whitewater Park Committee chairperson Kent Gray said. "Studies over the past year have concluded that it is possible to create an attraction that is one of its kind in the world. Development of a ‘green' recreational whitewater park is an exciting concept that our committee fully endorses and looks forward to pursuing."
The hydro power facility is expected to have the potential capacity to supply in excess of four megawatts of environmentally clean, stable and cost beneficial electricity to the City of Saskatoon. This is enough power to supply approximately 3,200 homes.

The Toon Town Whitewater Club has been pushing for the development of a whitewater park at the existing weir site, close to central Saskatoon. I am not certain what the power generation potential does to the proposal, and how that would be achieved.
(Thanks to Jimmy for sending me this bit of news.)
