Post subject:  Adhesives for D-Rings

I am outfitting a new Royalex canoe, and want to put in some D-Rings. They are the kind which come with reinforced vinyl patches I am wondering what to use for adhesives? In the past I used something called Vyna Tech 2000. It is expensive, and unavailable locally. I have a tube of Vyna Bond I could use. I also have Contact Cement. What is recommended?

vyna bond should work well, the use of a hairdry-er (or how do you caal such thing) is recommended.

I have used contact cements for D-rings on Royalex, Ram-X, and fibreglass with no problems at all.

Use an adhesive specific for vinyl. The stuff is expensive and nasty but it works. Contact cement will not hold vinyl to Royalex for long if there is any stess on the vinyl.

Vyna Bond is the standard, unless there is something new out.

Just be sure to follow the directions carefully - you need to allow it to dry thouroughly. IF you don't you can damage the boat, creating soft spots.

The vynal patch/D-rings I've installed with vyna bond have held great.

I did use contact cement / rubber cement to attach foam knee pads; the contact cemnt has held fine for that.

I have HH-66 vinyl cement left over from gluing the vinyl fabric on a kayak I made. Any issues with that glue that I should be aware of?
Thanks,
Bryan

I've switched to G-flex epoxy for the more critical D-rings, because I'm tired of D-rings attached with Vynabond coming loose even though I used completely correct technique.

I should mention that if you do NOT properly apply and dry Vynabond before applying the patch, still-wet Vynabond can leach through the vinyl and soften the ABS. And don't ever use Vynabond if you see that the vinyl top layer of the Royalex is worn through so that you are applying Vynabond directly to the ABS.

EZ Water- I hope I did not mess up my boat. I put on two layers of adhesive. I let the first layer dry and then applied the second.
Here is a link to photos of the new boat in action. I also posted this link in the general discussion under Wenonah Rogue.

You probably got away with it. I like the canoe shots. Shows that canoe better than Wenonah's stuff.
