This story had a good ending but just another reason why I preach that anyone that is going on a river should take a swift water rescue course.
I have lost a couple of Friends on western rivers to log jams.

It's worth the look at the images to see how spread out they where.

Quote:
We had a rescue Saturday July 5th on the Bow River downstream of Banff for some canoeists who were swept into a log jam. Their canoes overturned and one person was briefly caught underwater in the log jam. Fortunately they were able to free themselves from the log jam, swim to an island with the rest of the group and call for help. While this group was prepared and fairly experienced, it is a good reminder of the hazards posed by the sweepers and log jams on the rivers in the Mountain Parks, the need for wearing your PFD's, and the benefits of having an emergency communication device. The rivers continue to flow at fairly high levels in the Mountain Parks and while this can create good paddling conditions it also means that the currents are more powerful than other times of the year. Look far downstream for hazards and be ready to pull over and scout things if you are unsure about the correct line.
