Just ordered 3.25mm (common chair) cane from W.H. Kilby in Toronto.
I was recommended to use a natural cane as opposed to a synthetic cane.

Question?
What is the best way to preserve the natural cane?
- (tung) Oil?
- I was told not to varnish it, because it would become dry & brittle.

IMHO cause I have built 3-set of seats, I used natural and varnished the tops only allowing the bottom to be exposed to the air to dry out properly. Varnish is fine. The concern you make about is when you seal the bottom as well. Keep the bottom clean.

I agree with only varnishing the top of the seats. Remember to use spar varnish and not urethane, as spar varnish remains more elastic and will not dry out and flake or crack as quickly. (this also comes from experience)

Spar varnish also has UV inhibitors which will protect the seats in sun light. Not that the seats should see to much sun when your sitting on them and when your not the canoe is stored upside down

You could spray them with this so that it get the tops only without dripping to the underside.
