I'm toying around a little with the Modern Malecite canoe. Using the lines and measurements taken from The Bark Canoes and Skin Boats of North America, p.79, figure 70.

The surveyed boat had some serious tumblehome and pinched ends. I've removed some of that. The boat will build out as a cedar strip 16.5 feet and just over 34" wide. I'm not sure if this is going to be the next boat I build, but it's high on the list right now.

Any opinions? Ideas? If you'd like to see the Hydro on it, let me know. I can post. KAPER also.

Looks like it will be a nice looking boat. What did you use to make the drawings in? I have used Bear Boat pro and it doesn't look like that.

I used DELFTship Pro. There is a free version, also. DELFTship was known as FREE!ship. FS 2.6 is still on sourceforge.net and has some features that DELFTship has separated out for an additional fee, so it's nice to have both.

What are the reasons for reducing the tumblehome and pinched ends? Is it simply a matter of an easier build?

The main reason was to gain some room to sit in the ends, but also to help ease in building. Additionally, to gain stability when heeling the canoe for solo paddling.

Also, a little art - it just looks better to my eyes.

Have fun with the kayak! I just bought a new (used) one while over in Lake Superior Provincial Park. Talk about a beautiful place to paddle!
