Post subject:  Half Canoe Just Wondering

I know a lot of people make shelves etc. but I was wondering if you mounted a transom on a half canoe section would it float and either row/paddle/or sail.

The issue is I have two halves of a canoe. The stern end was crushed and rotted beyond repair. The bow half is in pretty good shape it is an old Champlain cedar canvas.

I was thinking about doing a Fall Woodworking project and wondered if this was feasible.

Plan at the moment is as follows:

Sand down hull inside and out.

Mount transom made of Epoxied Okoume plywood in Stern using Stitch and Glue filets and techniques to attach.

Then fill gaps in cedar strips with Sawdust Epoxy Mixture.

Thn Glass and Varnish.

Just blue skying at the moment and looking for input from builder types.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Sure why not... they built square stern canoes for many years in both wood and canvas and aluminum. They generally don't paddle well as the cavitation of water in the stern makes them slow, and noisy, and most folks who have them choose to mount a kicker on the transom and use them for fishing rather than paddling.

But I don't see why you couldn't do that, if you decide that repairing the damage is more than you want to take on.
