Seems like a moot discussion now, but the primary function of gelcoat is smoother finish and UV protection.

There will likely be some added abrasion protection due to a thicker layer of resin, but the added strength is negligible. All the gelcoat does for potentially serious "wounds" is make it harder to see the real damage in an impact.
