Mihun said: " I don't know much about royalex boats but I doubt it is repairable."

But Mihun, soon the price of Royalex will *skyrocket* when the plant shuts down! Surely you would want to salvage that valuable substance to make a financial killing later on!

Some quilter will figure out how to stitch pieces of Royalex together into a new canoe, or a political statement blanket, or something?!?

As luck would have it, we were discussing a few rescue options for this beast if it is still there this year. We do have a pretty good idea for putting it more or less back together. The question is WHO gets to paddle to monster out across the lake to get it home...lol.

I am all for rescuing it just for the sheer adventure of it.

Too bad it won't biodegrade as a Chestnut would be. I have found keels and ribs of old wood canvas canoe that are decomposing ala dead mammals.
It would degrade over time, although it may take a few hundred years. :(
Leave it under direct sunlight; in this case it would degrade faster.

I think it will break down into smaller pieces, I guess you could call that degrading. Even many plastics labelled as bio-degradable just break down into very fine pieces in a short space of time. Unfortunately much of this plastic waste just sits around until it becomes small enough to be eaten and/ or taken up by living things to become part of their body tissue. Meanwhile many of the toxic chemicals slowly leach out.

Our legacy to future generations!

Those particles of plastic even find their way into Arctic ice where they may be being concentrated.... I know, I know, OT...

Arctic sea ice polluted with microplastics

Pollutants may wind up in Arctic food chain as climate warms, ice melts

CBC News Posted: May 30, 2014

Arctic sea ice has sopped up and stored large quantities of microplastic pollution from populated areas in the south, a new study has found.

Microplastics are tiny pieces of plastic from microscopic to fingernail-sized that have been found polluting oceans and lakes around the world over the past decade, but not so far north as the Arctic Ocean. Scientists are concerned about them because they tend to suck up and concentrate other pollutants in the environment, which enter the food chain when animals swallow microplastics.

While much of the sea ice in the past has stayed frozen for many years, locking up pollutants and sediments trapped in them, more and more of that 'multi-year' ice is melting as the Arctic warms as a result of climate change.

It is not looking like I will be getting up that way for a recovery mission any time soon. Unless I take some big strong helpers...lol. I am sure its not going anywhere soon. Although to get it out of the river is likely a good idea.
