I've been out of canoe building for some years now and need some advice on hull laminate layups. I've built many cedar strip and 3 composite canoes over the years. I will be building 2 composite Yukon hulls (John Winters Design) this winter. They will be built over a cedar strip canoe with heat shrink plastic, (a male mold). I will be using epoxy resin. I have eglass (a large roll), carbon (enough for a single layer), innegra/basalt (enough for 2 layers) and intend to add foam ribs on the interior similar to Souris River canoes. I built a 3 layer hull in the past and it was to flexible. So I"m thinking 4 layers. I'm currently leaning towards eglass on the outside of hull, followed by innegra/basalt, followed by Carbon and finishing with innegra/basalt on the inside. I"ve read everything I can find on the subject including the Boatbuilders manual and the gentleman from bear mountain who posted his composite builds online. Basically What I need to know is the best order for the above fabrics. I will be using the canoe for tripping and regularly run class 2 whitewater and class 3 if my wife will let me For what its worth I was a canoe tripping instructor/guide for over 20 years and I know when to portage. Thanks in advance for your advice on the "perfect" laminate schedule for the above fabrics.
