Hi Everyone,

My name is Vince Fiorito.
I joined this site to find canoe travelling companions.
Gender and age are unimportant. As long as you can walk 5 km without stopping and lift 20kgs, you are fit enough to join me. I am friendly, happy, respectful...

For the last two summers I worked in and near Wabakimi Park for Wabakimi Outfitters. Among other duties, I was the chief map maker. I know the location of access points, portages, campsites, fishing holes, beaches, pictographs, and other points of interest, across and beyond Wabakimi Park.

I am now retired and plan to spend most of summer 2022 in Wabakimi Park exploring and doing nature photography. Basically from the beginning of June until the Labor Day weekend.

I prefer not to travel alone for safety reasons. I hope to make new friends. Ideal group size is 4 or 6 people. I have my own equipment, but willing to share. I can teach, guide, cook and clean.

While I can travel 8+ hours a day, and fight whitecaps, my preferred exertion level is stop and smell the wildflowers. My preferred direction is whichever way the wind blows. I take most portages. I will do class 1 or 2 rapids, if I feel safe about them.

If this experience interests you, please contact me for more information.

Wabakimi Park is the size of Prince Edward Island. Last year it had no fires and few visitors (~300 last year). In the more remote parts you would be far more likely to see endangered woodland caribou, than people.

Wabakimi: the land of the grey ghosts

Today’s post comes from Shannon Walshe, biologist at Wabakimi Provincial Park.

Peering out from among the trees, I am certain these curious animals watched us as we paddled by.
We know they exist, but they’re so seldom seen that they’re referred to as “the grey ghosts.”
Wabakimi Provincial Park is home to the elusive creature known as the Woodland Caribou, at the southernmost edge of their range.

As the biologist for Wabakimi, I consider myself very fortunate, spending my summers researching such majestic animals and paddling through this magical place defying description.

Getting into the backcountry usually requires a minimum eight-day canoe trip, flying or taking the train in...

Hi Vince,

We likely met, although I don't recall you specifically. I and two companions spent three weeks in Wabakimi in 2020, and availed Bruce and Brenda of their services. Bruce was particularly helpful in getting us a flight out when we were three or four days behind schedule, after facing three weeks of nothing but headwinds. The maps provided to us were second to none, so, thank you for that.

Hi Ken
Yes I am pretty sure I helped you unload your stuff off the float plane onto the dock at Wabakimi Outfitters.
I recognize your name.

If you are going back into the park, let me know, as I would join an existing group.
