A short note to say that I think David Thompson is the most remarkable early Canadian I have encountered in all my readings of northern literature. His travels, his mappings, his morality and his writings are superb. Any effort to commemorate his achievements and life are to be lauded.

In 2009 the Champlain Society will be publishing the first volume of the most definitive edition (to date) of his travels and writings.

And I'm hoping that in the 2010 edition of the Wilderness and Canoeing Symposium in Toronto we can again celebrate David Thompson.
