Some of you may be aware that a few years ago some people from Myccr got together and recorded a CD. It was never released, but I thought I would upload a few of the tunes that I wrote onto youtube for the enjoyment of others.... Anyway, this one is "The Old Canoe". The words are by George Marsh ( circa 1905).... I used most of the poem, but not all... the complete words are below. Anyway, here is the Youtube link... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz6j_KXL9pM Thanks to Al Marcon for his lead vocals, and to the rest of the "canoeheads" for their conributions !!!! " The Old Canoe" My seams gape wide so I'm tossed aside To rot on a lonely shore While the leaves and mould like a shroud enfold, For the last of my trails are o'er; But I float in dreams on Northland streams That never again I'll see, As I lie on the marge of the old portage With grief for company. When the sunset gilds the timbered hills That guard Timagami, And the moonbeams play on far James Bay By the brink of the frozen sea, In phantom guise my Spirit flies As the dream blades dip and swing Where the waters flow from the Long Ago In the spell of the beck'ning spring. Do the cow-moose call on the Montreal When the first frost bites the air, And the mists unfold from the red and gold That the autumn ridges wear? When the white falls roar as they did of yore On the Lady Evelyn, Do the square-tail leap from the black pools deep Where the pictured rocks begin? Oh! the fur-fleets sing on Timiskaming As the ashen paddles bend, And the crews carouse at Rupert House At the sullen winter's end; But my days are done where the lean wolves run, And I ripple no more the path Where the gray geese race cross the red moon's face From the white wind's Arctic wrath. Tho' the death fraught way from the Saguenay To the storied Nipigon Once knew me well, now a crumbling shell I watch the years roll on, While in memory's haze I live the days That forever are gone from me, As I rot on the marge of the old portage With grief for company. |

Wonderful poem and a wonderful song. I'm still waiting to buy the CD, but in the meantime, any chance you could share an MP3 version? |

Post subject: | Beauty lake ( Temagami) - song and video |
I previously posted a link to the song "The Old Canoe". Here is another youtube video for the song "Beauty Lake(Temagami).... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbzHm4ubiA4 I wrote the music and lyrics for a CD project that involved several MYCCR members. ( unfortunately unreleased). Please note that while there is a Beauty Lake ( in Temagami) and it is my understanding that it has been logged, the rest of the lyrics are fictional. I wanted to write a song about the effects that clearcutting can have, and thought that the story of a famiy's relationship with a lake over the generations might do that. The idea of using the actually Beauty lake was suggested by a forgotten myccr memberover 4 years ago. I liked the irony of the suggestion. Enjoy ! |

Dave, thanks so much for getting these songs out to us, after so many years. ![]() It's been a long wait, but worthwhile. Here's some history, dug up from the forums: Calling all Canoeing Musicians ???? You Missed a Good Breakfast! The Canoeheads (photos) |

Thanks, Dave. I sure enjoyed those sessions! I listen to my "rough mix" on a regular basis. Is it possible to put the recordings up on I Tunes? Might be an inexpensive way of making the tunes available to the public without further production expenses. Bob |
