Here is a short video clip of a Great Blue Heron that we saw fishing on Little Joe Lake back in August. He is in the marsh at the north east end of Little Joe Lake. The fishing must have been pretty good because we first saw him (her?) in the morning and he(she?) was still fishing the same area when we came through again on our way back to camp in the afternoon.

Pretty neat pics/clips - I see these birds so often but never get close enough to observe details of how they feed. Thanks!

Great Blue Herons were the most abundant bird we saw on the Green River in Utah. I was surprised as that water seems so silty. Yet there are fish!

The other nearly as abundant bird out there was the Raven. Not crows.

I'm glad you liked it. I love the piece where he swallows the fish and takes a drink to wash it down. Figured it was worth sharing even if it is a bit shaky.

We have had such lousy luck trying to get good photos of herons. Thanks for showing me that it can be done.

It's really neat that you captured him/her while dining. I always figured good fishing should be found where herons and loons hang out. I haven't proven that theory yet, but I keep trying.

Depends on the fisherperson! Our loons like to mock fishermen. I watched one duo fish for an hour without a bite. Loon came up with a fish next to their boat, gobbled it and yodeled.

One guy threw his rod..

Barbara - I took a bunch of pictures of the heron that day and the still pictures in that video were the best of them. I'm starting to think that I'll need to go back to a manual focus lense to get a better picture. The autofocus is great for getting something in focus, but the subject really has to fill the frame to make sure the camera is focusing on the right thing. I had a couple other pretty good shots where the body was in focus but the head and neck weren't quite focused.
