Wow! Some nice comments on here! :o
I don't watch a lot of YT, if I do, it will usually be in hardwater season when I'm itching to get outside. Last February on particularly cold day, Leah and I fried up the last of our walleye and sat around the fireplace watching our fav channels. The adventure, quality and commentary are all great on the following:

Jim Baird Adventurer
Backcountry Angling Ontario
Northern Scavenger
David Hartman
Tumblehome

I've tripped with a few of them and our tripping styles (and by extension, video content) jive.

InSeasonStudios is great as it's all local routes (Timmins area) - though I skim more to get an idea of what the route will be like when I'm planning.

If I don't have to 'skim' it's a win. Echoing what a few others said, short clips, with a good pace to keep the story flowing. I'll mainly watch for some trip planning or hardwater season inspiration etc. also, if the route has the 'cool' factor. I'm a big sucker for lesser traveled routes, and that's what I readily digest. That's just me personally, and as JK said, you can't please everyone. My goals with video production have always been twofold:

1. Make a great lasting memory for myself and tripmates (editing is an extension of the trip for me as I get to relive it through the creative process).
2. Inspire others to get out there and paddle the route for themselves. The more paddlers, the better - especially on 'lost' routes!

YT can be a wild west for creators. Plenty of opinions and lots of trolls. so long as I achive 1 & 2 with some degree of success, I am satisfied. YT is also an interesting way to watch the progress and skill development of a paddler. I'm reminded of this when a decade old video of mine resurfaces from time to time....

In light of what has been said here I made videos of my last Atikaki Provincial Park, Manitoba canoe trip with many different slants. Except for the camp cooking video all were made to provide info on a canoe destination with almost no online presence. Yes, the big rivers get aired but not the lake country and its solitude. The comments I have received so far tell me that each type of presentation has its fans and detractors. YouTube ad revenue shared with channel owners is $2 to $3 per thousand views so you can see paddling videos are not being produced to buy a new canoe!!

Nowadays you can't even monetize your youtube channel until you have 1000 followers and 10,000 views (or something like that).

I'd like to monetize my new paddling channel but I cannot. Luckily I do have a channel with a few thousand viewers and hundreds of thousands of views so I dump stuff in there when I want to monetize

I agree with a lot of these picks. I really like the visual quality and created atmosphere of both Tumblehome's and Chris Prouse's videos.

Prospector 16, please post your channel link.

I agree with so many of the recommendations here. But Stajanleafs nailed it - I like making the videos so that my buddies who don't come along, and most of my family who never would, and my kids who can't wait to, get a chance to see what I've been up to. And, so that people who are considering the route, get a chance to see some portion of it. And so that I can turn it on in February, and have a trip down memory lane. If I can boil 10 days of footage down to an hour, I feel like I've done pretty good. Someone who wants a 5 minute video can use the fast forward key. When I watch others' videos, I am primarily looking for red flags that would put me off a route, then considering the positives of the route, then enjoying the storytelling and tunes. I really enjoy seeing the summer camp kids' videos - they have so much energy and unbridled optimism - it's contagious. Just wish there was a little less Mumford & Sons out there...

I have been watching Mathew Posa lately. He is in Michigan and has some really good trips. Watching his newest week long trip now. Aside from him my main subscriptions are: Joe Robinet, My Self Reliance, BAO, Explore The Backcountry, Chris Prowse, Jason Eke (new for me this month, not bad!) Doug Outside (now Doug Linker). and Scott at Drenalin Adventures.

Although I am now toning it down allot, I spent the last 2.5 years filming my own content and am now getting ready to start posting my own vids.. been a great learning experience. I appreciate what these people do and go through to get that 30 minute video. Kudos to all all of them.

I'm subbed to all that are mentioned. (I'm a bit sad as I was hoping more would be mentioned on here that maybe I missed...)
Great list! Of late, Jim Baird and BAO are my favorites. Wintertrekker and Maddy the Goose got me back into tripping and taking the plunge at solo tripping - which I wished I had tried years ago...
I appreciate the efforts of ALL the canoe tripping You Tubers. It takes a lot of effort to make these. I can only paddle for about 21-30 days of the year. The rest of the time I prefer watching tripping You Tubers instead of anything on Netflix or cable etc.
Add Larry Hyett and Jim B's brother Ted Baird to the list too

One thing about the list is that almost all of them are based in Ont (except GRS). I'm really hoping that there will be more creators show casing other areas of North America. I can watch only so many videos of Algonquin - who am I kidding... I'll still watch :)

Nick Harland has lots of AB trips shot 1st person

Also, Don't forget Justin Barbour. He's done some epic travelling solo with his dog(s) through NL and Lab. rarely with a canoe but hiking/pack raft through mostly virgin routes.

I too set up a channel years ago - mostly so I could ask the You tubers questions. This year I took the plunge and started making some videos... If you're curious have a look.
Caveat! I'm no where near the caliber of tripper (or photo/vlogger) that these You Tubers are so please be gentle. I'm not making them to get subscribers or make money. Just wanted a place where I could share my experiences. If it inspires 1 person to get out it'll be worth it

Not quite finished editing the Yukon trip but should be by the end of the month. Hope you like it

Yeah Justin Barbour...I don't watch the bushcraft stuff, just not into it, but his long trip across NFLD was a fantastic watch.

Northern Scavengers released the trailer for their Labrador documentary today, airing in Feb 2020. That's gonna be a good one. I believe Alex is editing that one as a film fest style vid, and then Noah will release the vlog trip format later.

Keep it up Mark!

Mark at Nomad Boatbuilding is a very talented craftsman. He's on Patreon, Youtube, and Instagram. I've learned a lot from him.

Erik Normark, from Sweden... mostly hiking and backpacking but the recordings are high quality, esp natural sound... rain, wind, birds, waves, water.

Here are two of the more watery paddling vids... hope the use of a kayak will not detract from the peace and quiet.

Hey Jon

Northern Scavengers are always good. Cant wait for that either.

You also make me want to fish even though I've never done it and have never felt the urge... Any chance of some off season vids with a little more detail about lures and techniques? Might seem obvious to some but I know nothing

Keep your paddle wet!

I have watched “once around Algonquin a few times” by Kevin Callan. Have a feeling it will become one of those “all time” tripping videos eventually. I love watching all the regulars but I have to say my top ones as of late are:
Tumblehome
Alexisoutdoors
Justin Barbour
Northern Scavenger
Passionate Paddler
Dave Hartman
Explore the backcountry
Tight Loops(by far my favourite fly fishing/tripping videos)

There are many more!! Trolls can make a lot of amazing creators quit. I have experienced very light trolling and can only imagine how bad it gets with popularity. I have a few friends in the movie bizz and they all told me the same thing if you want to be successful>>Every story should have a beginning, middle and end. I think some creators forget that and the viewer can get lost or even worse BORED! I tip my hat to all the creators out there, we are so incredibly lucky to have people that create such niche videos. AND scene! ;)

My other youtube channel is fairly popular with about 2500 subscribers - enough to monetize it for about $1000 / year. Anyway yeah trolls can be terrible. They've put some truly rotten things on my videos but I always leave them there and put a comment on their comment like : "Thank you for leaving this comment which demonstrates to others what miserable excuses for human beings there are in this world. I am leaving your comment here for others to see so that they can feel better about themselves as human beings"

Sometimes the troll will delete there comment after that.

I know the Passionate Paddler had a rotten troll a number of months ago while he was away on a trip. He got pretty demoralized by it but I had a few chats with him about how I deal with trolls and some of the trolls I've had in the past, and I think I made him feel better.
