On this Algonquin canoe trip we travel from one access point to another.

We started our journey on access #4 and over the course of five days we made our way to access #5 Canoe Lake.

It was a great backcountry canoe trip with great weather, minimal bugs and lots of wildlife including a scary bear encounter (watch to the end).

Did you have bear spray or bangers? Was this bear reported to park staff??

I just did the Dunlop lake loop and had 2 bears in one afternoon show up about 2 hrs apart close to camp. (saw 3 in total), very big males, I would guess around 350+lb or so, they were the largest black bears I have ever seen in 30 yrs of tripping. I had no issues with the them, but one was about 30m away. He did not notice us or if he did he didn't show it. After an hour he wondered off back to the mainland (we were on an island site). This bear was a little close for comfort being how large he was. But it definitely keeps you on your toes when you see them actively going to campsites. I prepared a ditch bag in case I had to vacate my camp for a bit and come back when he was gone. There was lots of signs of bear activity on every lake and portage we traveled on during that trip. They seemed to be interested in flipping large rock over looking for grubs and working their way along the shorelines. Bears always add a sense of exhilaration to any trip, but i have to be honest, I have seen enough and hope to not see any more while tripping, at least not that close for sure.

No we did not have either. I've never had any issues in my 25 years in the backcountry until this trip. I think we'll be taking both from now on.

And yes we reported the incident to park staff the next day. Several other campers also reported the bear as it was going from site to site that night.
