Hello, I am hoping to do the loop this fall. With water levels low can Canal Rapids be lined instead of the 2300m portage? I have been many times to the area but only seen Canal Rapids once from the bridge in May. Thank you for any input.

I’m sure there are many on this forum that can speak to it better than I but my wife and I did do a loop on the Magnetewan in early September of 2012 starting in Wahwashkesh and onto the South Branch to Six Mile. Not sure if anything has changed since. We opted not to take the 2300m portage around Canal Rapids. It requires sliding the canoe down the dam. This was done on river right. After that we did run some easier moving water. I think we may have gotten out a couple of times for drag overs. If memory serves me correctly there was an island in the rapids. We chose to go around it to river left because the water appeared to be deeper which required us to do a short portage at the end over big and awkward boulders. Shortly after I was able to line the canoe through the one knarly spot to the bottom on the right bank. The flows were low and the rocks to stand on to line the canoe would not have been exposed in higher levels. I’m not sure what the flows were that year or how that compares to this year. For the trip we were prepared to run the moving water and were able to line to ensure we stayed dry..... if that is of any help.

If you re starting at Wawash it is prob easier to go thru Kashegaba and Whites-----details have been posted on here a few times.
