We are going to fix the BBCode for embedded YouTube videos, and we are going to do it in this Topic.

When selecting postreply, just above the text box is this button |youtube|

The help line reads: [youtube]url of youtube video[/youtube]

This video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEizBaDw8wI

So far so good.

The text string is specifically [youtube]url of youtube video[/youtube] in the format
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= & 11 characters

This will not work: [youtube]https://youtu.be/LfRvAVW7WS0[/youtube]
This will not work: [youtube]https://www.youtube.com/embed/LfRvAVW7WS0[/youtube]
This will not work: [youtube]LfRvAVW7WS0[/youtube]

This will work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfRvAVW7WS0

Please try it out if you happen to read this, and give any feedback. The format can be changed. The 11 character string is the unique identifier on YouTube and the only portion that really matters. So it could be written in another way if you prefer something.

Also, it seems that it is possible to write a BBCode for these other formats. For example, I could allow for the Share format, which is
https://youtu.be/BEizBaDw8wI

This will not work: [youtube]https://youtu.be/BEizBaDw8wI[/youtube]

@eberlym

Wasn't my first attempt not supposed to work while my second attempt that didn't work should have worked?

If I am interpreting your earlier messages correctly then I think I received the opposite results! :)

What you did is correct. You entered the correct coding, except that the video itself, as hosted on YouTube, has embedding disallowed.

You have to go the YouTube studio for this video, in Video Details, and under Show More there is a checkbox to 'Allow embedding'

Select that box and save.

Ok, I've made that change. I will give it a bit of time and see if it works on it's own on this page. If not I will try it again.

All is well now. I went around and repaired quite a few links in this Forum, mostly by GRS Riverrider.

The big difference was that sometime in the last 3 years or so, YouTube changed their video format to include the s in https://

The old links in here were all http://

Thanks for this Matt. I can get new links working but I don't seem to be able to go back and edit my older posts on an existing thread.

Should I be able to edit posts from a couple of months ago? If not, I can just add new posts with working embedded links but it feels messy doing that.

The updated tags are working......

BUT

They are only displaying correctly in Chrome! Using FireFox I'm not getting anything at all.

Both Chrome and FireFox versions I'm using are the latest updates.

Can confirm. I'm running Firefox 94 - no YouTube videos are showing up for me either.

Chrome is working, though.

Just for kicks I gave MS Edge a spin for the first time ever!

FWIW - the videos do display!

However, I will not be using Edge and I doubt many people do. Just checking the stats, pretty shocking to see how few are still using FireFox although I suspect FF usage on Myccr is a bit higher than the overall average, probably more desktop access than the reported averages as well.

I'm biased of course but I still think it's worthwhile to try to get this function operational under FF as well as Chrome (can anybody confirm functionality using Safari?)

This might have something to do with it:

Quote:
<embed src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hm0CfK4rSng" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350">

Adobe started blocking Flash from playing sometime in January of 2021. It appears that while Chrome sees the Flash tag, it figures out that it's actually a Youtube embed, whereas Firefox sees that tag, and just insta-blocks all Flash content.

Probably, there's some software out of date, as no software released in the last few months would be putting x-shockwave-flash content up. That's the wrong way to do it in any case, and if it isn't updated to more modern standards, will surely break in other browsers as well, rendering all of emberlym's efforts moot.

In other words, Firefox is doing it the correct way here, but Chrome is figuring out a way around our website's shortcomings. :)

@Splake

I fixed all the links in your trip report for the Petawawa River. As to what the time limit is on editing your own posts; I still endeavour to look that up.
