Then it’s on to Black Lake, for a bit more beach and cliff camping, a great sunset, and the ride home.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this look at a part of Saskatchewan that’s quite a bit different from how I think most people imagine it to look. I’d be glad to answer any more questions about the trip if anyone’s interested.

Regards,

jmc

Hey JMC, GREAT trip report! What beautiful country there! That open boreal/taiga forest is just so wonderful to camp in and travel through. Such a refreshing change from our thick southern boreal jungle here! I am not going north this year so I am missing it, and so thanks for sharing that landscape. I will have to look that route up on the maps.

Thanks to all for the kind words.

My one photographic regret on this trip was that most days were very hazy and smoky, as a result of strong south and southwest winds blowing in smoke from distant fires. As a result, I don't think the photos entirely do the Porcupine justice: it's really a remarkably scenic area.

Wow, great report and an amazing area that very few folks get the chance to paddle.
Thanks for sharing the photos!
Cheers,
Bryan

I'm planning lengthy leave-of-absence from the day job in 2015, and am hoping to head out to Saskatchewan for an extended solo trip. Keep the photos coming! I'm already getting psyched up.

Fantastic.
I've canoed the Fond du Lac so I know the area a little. The Porcupine has always been on my list.
Loved the lily pads.
Esker camping--oh lovely! PS nice tent!
And sharp photo images--very impressive given the weather, haze, and smoke.

Absolutely fantastic!

I am curious to know if you saw any body else while on your trip?

Hello John,

Another great TR.
What were your flyin costs for this trip?

I don't have Laurel's book handy, is the Procupine the river with the cave and the mythical creature in the canyon?

Hi Kingfisher -

Archer does mention a cave. I don't recall anything about a creature in the canyon, although she does mention the Dene called that section "Dead Man's River." I did not see anything supernatural, but I'm not very imaginative.

Cost: the flight to Bently was 48 miles, the flight out of Burr Falls (Black Lake) was 72 miles. The Beaver was going for $9.70/mile including fuel. With a total of (72+48)x2 = 240 flying miles, tie on fees and taxes, the total bill was $2677.

Thanks for reminding me.

Lpaddle -

I saw a fly-in fishng party on Nordbye Lake on day 4. I saw no one else on the route. I think the McIntyre is quite rarely paddled. Although the Porcupine sees more use, I think it would be unusual to encounter others on the river.
