The Rhodies and I have been doing chunks of the NFCT a couple of times a year for the last few years. This year the Astrogator decided to pay a little more attention to his wife which left the rest of us a little dry.
Mike aka Wickerbutt aka Canoedad had a plan to fix that. He said, "lets go to Grand Lake Stream in Down East Maine and paddle out into West Grand, Junior, Scraggly, Bottle, Sysladobsis and Pocumus Lakes".
So, in the middle of August, we did.

The weather could not have been better. We've heard that these lakes can get pretty rough when the wind picks up. It never did while we were there. Sunny. warm, enough breeze to make things comfortable. It doesn't get much better.

We met some folks I know from Somerville Mass.

Jim S and I got a little sailing in.

We met up with Bob Mill's gang at Scraggly inlet and later Dobsis Dam. I remember Bob posting here in May asking if anyone knew about the area.

Bob recognized Mike's canoe from the Moosehead TR I posted here. Hey Mike yer boat's a celebrity!
Our group of 5 paddlers, 4 boats split up a few times. Our practice of everyone hauling their own kit made that easy enough.

I have to say this is a nice place to do a little canoe trip. Especially if you can catch the perfect weather that we did.

Thanks...I have a five day window in early Oct..I am going to try these "close to home lakes" but bet that the weather gods will not shine on me! I always get snowed on...

I haven't paddled a solo in some months and am in withdrawal...again thanks for posting those marvelous pictures. I appreciate the route map..off to get the DeLorme atlas!

In addition to Delorme, have a look at this.

These sites are more recent and don't appear in my Maine Atlas.
