I know it's early, but I need to know dates, ASAP.

I have to submit my vacation requests by tomorrow. I didn't realize it was that time again and already the deadline for me at work is tomorrow.

Thanks.

From one permanently on Vacation. My calendar has DF 13 from Saturday, February 16 to Sunday February 24. marked. I think this was discussed at DF12, not sure on that.
This is the usual dates Saturday to Sunday.
Don't book your time until we hear from someone that really knows.
It would be nice if we get winter.
Stay safe

Thanks Smokey. I would be a shame to miss Swift and his truck load of beverages.
See ya at the station.
Stay safe.

Hi all,
No need to book vacation for that anymore.... I'm done with work... My last day is Thurs Oct 4th... then vacation including a 12 day trip to China... and retirement on Nov 1st, 2012. So, I'll be at DF13 barring any unforseen circumstances... might even have a new recruit.

Cheers,
Al 8)

Deep Freeze 2013

Every winter since 2002 a group of enthusiasts has been getting together in February somewhere north of Sudbury and having a good time indulging in one of our favourite pastimes – sleeping in the cold!

This coming February is the 12th year of this get together and this is an invitation to anyone who would like to join in on the fun. The first “gathering” was held on the Vermillion River north of Sudbury with 8 participants. Beginning in 2003 we have used the “Budd Car” rail service from Sudbury to access the backcountry north of Cartier, Ontario in the Spanish River area. The 2nd year saw 20 participants in total and in subsequent years the average has been about 30 - 35 attendees yearly. Of the original group 3 of us have attended every year and Jim has been bringing his kid(s) since 2004! It’s a diverse group with folks coming and going depending on the year but we’ve had attendees from as far a field as Colorado, Tony (our honorary Canuck) and his family from New York state and a couple of Brits who were doing a work placement in Ontario one year!

WHEN: February 16 – 24/ 2013 (Sat – Sun, 9 days)
Where: Nitro Creek
How: Via Rail Service from Sudbury, Ontario – “Budd Car”
Who: Interested? Join us!!

The group uses the Via Rail “Budd Car” train service from Sudbury, Ontario to access the area (Nitro Creek) where we are camping. Nitro Creek is in the Spanish River watershed northwest of Sudbury, east of the river and west of Highway 144 in the Halfway Provincial Park area. The following link is to a map of the area at 1:50000 scale. The 1:50000 topographic sheet is - Pogamasing, 41-I/13.

How does ticketing work? You purchase your ticket from Via Rail – you need to ask for a return ticket Sudbury to Pogamasing on the Sudbury – White River train. Once on the train you tell the crew that you’re getting off at mileage 14.3, on the Nemogos Sub at Nitro Creek since you not really going to Pog! The crew will know where that location is. You can buy a ticket at the Sudbury station but it’s better to get it ahead of time so Via knows how many cars to have for the trips. You can get a ticket at any Via Rail office or online at:

http://www.viarail.ca/en/trains/ontario ... hite-river

A return ticket for an adult is about $45.00. The train leaves Sudbury at 09:00 and usually takes a couple hrs to get to Nitro Ck. and the return trip train usually picks us up at 16:30 in the afternoon and arriving back in Sudbury at 18:30. It should be noted that delays have been known to occur so plan accordingly.

Anyone interested in this trip doesn’t necessarily have to commit to the full 9 days and in fact many folks attend for a portion of the time only. You can alter or shorten your dates of both arrival and return according to the Budd car schedule. the train runs up to White River on Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday and returns back to Sudbury on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday, on Monday they fix it! We have Sat to Wed/Fri/Sun, Tues to Sunday, Thurs to Sunday attendees etc.

This is a relaxed base camp style winter camping trip. There is lots of hiking, ice fishing, socializing, camp chores etc. All participants are responsible for their own arrangements; this is your trip if you choose to take it. Many will be there and folks are more than welcome to come. Bring your gear, be prepared and plan for it accordingly.

The following link will take you to trip reports from past Deep Freeze trips in the area - note missing 2011/12 trips, we did go!
